Week of October 18, 2022

From the President

I enjoyed seeing many of you during USF's Homecoming festivities. This week-long celebration is a time for students, faculty, staff and alumni to proudly display their Bulls spirit, reflect on campus traditions and show the community what it means to be forever green and gold.

We had a lively crowd at many of our events, including the Running of the Bulls Parade on Friday evening and our Homecoming football game against Tulane, where I had the honor of flipping the coin on the field.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and to those who helped organize such an exciting week. It’s our community that makes this celebration one of my favorite times of the year.

Updates

• I was delighted to join the Alumni Association at the Working Bulls Alumni Lunch to personally thank some of our most dedicated alumni — those who continue to serve as USF employees. We have more than 3,500 USF employees who are alumni of the university, and as a fellow “Working Bull,” it is an honor to serve my alma mater as president. I greatly appreciate our Bulls faculty and staff for everything you do to help our university thrive.

• For the past several weeks, the USF community has recognized Hispanic Heritage Month and I was so pleased to attend the Hispanic Heritage Celebration Awards, honoring students, staff, faculty and community leaders who are making an impact through academic research or community service. This longstanding event provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase USF's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and celebrate an array of individuals for their important work.

• I had a great visit with the USF Staff Senate during the group’s monthly meeting. The members of this advisory council each play a critical role by serving as a voice for all staff employees across our university’s three campuses. Our staff are essential to the university’s success, and I look forward to celebrating our talented and hardworking employees at the Outstanding Staff Awards later this week.

• I was both impressed and inspired while celebrating the 26 faculty recipients of USF’s Outstanding Research Achievement Awards, the largest internal recognition of its kind at the university. This talented group of scholars is helping solve global problems related to a wide number of issues in our society — such as COVID-19, children’s literacy development and addressing and reducing health disparities. I am so proud of our faculty for all they are achieving to advance knowledge, find solutions and transform lives.

• Congratulations to our talented team in the USF Office of Supplier Diversity for receiving the Doing Well While Doing Good® Humanitarian Award from the Florida State Minority Supplier Development Council. Last week I took a moment to reaffirm USF’s commitment to supplier diversity and share several ways that we can do even more to support this important initiative to help enhance diverse-owned businesses in the Tampa Bay region. As part of these efforts, USF is hosting its annual Supplier Diversity Day on Oct. 28, and I hope you’ll register for this important event.

At USF Women in Leadership & Philanthropy’s Symposium, we honored two outstanding women who have made an incredible impact at USF and in the lives of many people. Congratulations to USF President Emerita Judy Genshaft for receiving the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award and Chief Health Officer and College of Public Health Dean Donna Petersen for receiving the 2022 Community Leadership Award. These selfless women have led by example, and we are inspired by their passion for serving others.

• Last night I attended the USF College of Nursing White Coat Ceremony and it was truly uplifting to see undergraduate students presented with new white coats in an event made possible by a generous $50,000 grant from Moffitt Cancer Center. The college has a very robust partnership with Moffitt, which includes a scholarship program for accelerated students that pays for tuition and fees if students commit to employment at Moffitt after graduating. Community partnerships like this one are an important part of USF's strategic plan and a key to our university's future success.

Boundless Bulls

His experience at USF shaped his career and he’s still giving back. Since receiving his undergraduate degree in criminology in 1986, Manley Jaquiss continues to remain actively involved with USF and make an impact on students.

Boundless Bulls is a collection of stories about what truly makes USF great – the people. It is a focus on our community footprint, our impact and the trajectory of where we can go together.

Our Bulls soccer teams are on a roll lately. The USF Women’s Soccer team is on a four-game winning streak and in second place in the conference standings as they pursue their sixth consecutive year as conference champions. USF Men’s Soccer remains the only undefeated team in conference play in the American Athletic Conference, with only four regular-season games left to play.
