, Are you looking to get involved in the community?
It's not too late and we would love to help. We are here to connect you to an amazing array of opportunities. We provide transportation to almost every activity and you go with a group of students together. Students often tell us that getting involved in the community becomes one of the best highlights of the week.
If you have questions, we are here to help. Email service@jcu.edu or stop in to the Center for Service-Learning and Social Action any time. We are located in the Administration Building on the ground floor, Room AD-32.
Have a great week,
The CSSA Team

Ruta Marino is making a difference, one quilt at a time!
During the pandemic this past year, many people used their extra time to binge-watch episodes of their favorite shows, take extra naps, or learn new dances from Tik Tok. But Ruta Marino, Administrative Assistant in the Psychology Department, used her time during the lockdown in a much more productive and creative way by designing and sewing quilt after quilt to provide warmth and comfort to others.
In the past year, Ruta designed, cut, sewed, quilted, and bound more than 50 quilts (see photo), each with a different color scheme and pattern. Hundreds of hours were invested in making these beautiful works of art... and heart. On Monday, October 3, 2021, the quilts were donated to The Journey Center for Safety and Healing to be given to women and children who have been affected by the trauma of domestic violence. The quilts were gratefully received by none other JCU Alumna Marina Giannarakis '17 who upon graduating completed her masters in public service and now works at the Journey Center as a Victim Advocate.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Ruta for this work of thoughtfulness and generosity and celebrate her outreach in such a remarkable way!

Please join us in welcoming Emanuel Howard!
CSSA is thrilled to welcome Emanuel Howard, a sophomore at St. Martin de Porres High School, joining our team on Tuesdays this semester. The oldest of five siblings, Emanuel proudly shared that he will be the first grandchild in his family to attend college. Emanuel's favorite subject is Biology, and he aspires to become an orthopedic doctor someday. When he's not focusing on school, you can find Emanuel at the movies with his friends or playing football!
Emanuel's excitement to be a part of the JCU community has not gone unnoticed. He looks forward to learning more about the work CSSA does in the Cleveland community and becoming familiar with the JCU campus.
We are delighted to have Emanuel with us this semester! Stop by AD-32 to meet Emanuel and introduce yourself.

Footprints for Fatima 2021
Footprints for Fatima is virtual this year, and that means you have a whole month to complete the challenges! Footprints is an annual run/walk that helps raise money for the Fatima Food Drive. Each year, Arrupe Social Justice Scholars collect monetary donations to purchase enough groceries to feed 150 families a week’s worth of food, including supplies for a full Thanksgiving meal! Since we’re using an online, flex-time race platform, the 5K Run, 10K Run, and 1-5 Mile Walk can be completed anytime between October 2 and November 2.
