The Governor's Message

Last month, I shared the prediction of the groundhog for an early spring. The groundhog appears to have been correct. In Des Moines, February only had three days with a temperature below average. My crocuses are blooming and the daffodils are near blooming.

There is an old story about blind men trying to describe an elephant by experiencing one part of the elephant.

One man touched the trunk of the elephant and described it as a thick snake. One man touched the ear and described it as a fan. One man touched the leg and described it as a tree trunk. One man touched the side of the elephant and described it as a wall. Obviously, none came close to describing an elephant.

More than 25 Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanians have already registered to attend this July's International Convention in Denver. That's halfway to our district's goal for attendance with several months still to go for the July 3-6 event.

While that is great news, REGISTER NOW IF YOU WANT TO BE ONE OF THE ATTENDEES RECEIVING A FREE TICKET TO THE COLORADO ROCKIES BALLGAME ON JULY 4! Only the first 1,000 to register get that free ticket and Kiwanis International reports total attendance is already at more than 750.

Convention Info & Registration

The district's assigned hotel is Hyatt House. This hotel is just two blocks away from the convention center. Free breakfast is included at this hotel. A direct link to Hyatt House reservations can be found on both the district or international websites or click HERE.

Never been to an international convention?

This year’s convention is in Denver at the Colorado Convention Center. Not only is the location close to our district but this year, there is a chance for first-time convention goers to get a few dollars to help with the cost of attending, thanks to the LaRue fund.

If you are a first-time attendee, you have a chance to win one of five (5) $500 scholarships to help offset registration and other costs. On May 1, five names will be randomly selected to receive the scholarships.

Scholarship Information & Entry Rules:

1. Register to attend international convention and be a first-time attendee to an international convention. (As confirmed by registration records at Kiwanis International.)

2. Complete the “I want to go to ICon in Denver” entry form. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/IwantogotoDENVER

3. On May 1, the District will announce the five names drawn as scholarship winners.

4. If you are a scholarship winner, you will be asked to provide receipts (registration, hotel, etc.) immediately following convention and, once those are received, the $500 scholarship check will be issued to attendee.

5. You may also be asked to share your convention experience at a district or division event in the coming year.

SPONORS NEEDED FOR DISTRICT CONVENTION

The Nebraska-Iowa District Convention Committee is asking for your help to make the Aug. 2 and 3 Convention a success and also keep registration fees as low as possible. There are multiple ways for your club or organizations and businesses you are connected with to be a sponsor at convention. See the sponsor brochures at the links below. Sponsor commitment deadline is April 15. Convention registration will open in May.
