Artist of the Month- Diane Ransom

This article is a replica of an article that Diane wrote in 2014 during a planning meeting to create the Crossroads Arts Council.

When I was growing up, I was very blessed to have a father who wanted to create art. I was born while he was overseas in Europe fighting, during World War II. I was almost two years old before father and daughter first met. To fulfill his desired vocation of becoming a commercial artist, he took a correspondence art course after he came home from the war. In the meantime, he also started his training to become a pipefitter, the job that became the means to support his family. He was quite a good artist and he did create some ads for a local furniture company, drawing suites of rooms of furniture. He also did some clothing ads, mostly men’s clothing, hats, (when men wore hats) and other ads. However, commercial art at that time was not going to support a family, and his vocation became his avocation.

Dad tried so many different medias as I was growing up. I think back on it now and I think he was just having the kind of fun a kid has in trying new things. He grew up in a time where a third grade education was enough and then you got a job to help support the family. He did, but you would have never guessed that from the man I knew as my father.

On a typical Sunday, Dad would suggest that we take a family ride. So often our Sunday drives would end up at Forest Park, going to the St. Louis Art Museum. It quickly became one of my favorite places to visit. Fast forward to a time when I was a newlywed and my husband and I wanted to spend Mother’s Day doing something special with his mother. In trying to think of somewhere unique to visit, I asked her when the last time was that she had been to the Art Museum. She hadn’t ever been to the Art Museum! I was sure that unbeknownst to myself I had been covertly abducted by aliens and taken to another dimension. She did enjoy the day and she was amazed at so many of the well-known pieces that she had heard of but didn’t realize were literally in her own back yard. With loving respect to my mother-in-law, I must tell you that she raised ten children, most during the Depression, grew most of what they ate and that didn’t leave her much time for visiting an art museum. But I also know that without realizing it, she was expressing the art within herself when she put together a delicious meal that also looked pleasing on the plate, and grew a garden that was just as beautiful as it was delicious.

Many was the time my sisters and I would find ourselves sitting at the kitchen table after supper during the summer and Dad would pull out those old correspondence books. He would sit with us and try to teach us what it was that he did so easily.

Let me make myself clear here, I am not an artist, but I do enjoy doing a variety of the things that Dad so lovingly offered us. I do paint a little, as well as a number of other enjoyable, artistic pastimes. However, I need a pattern and a lot of shortcuts that I know my true artist friends would never consider. But that doesn’t bother me, because I enjoy the results and I know my Dad would approve as long as I was enjoying the time spent doing it.

And that is why I so enjoy this time of being a part of the creation of the Crossroads Arts Council. I don’t need to be able to do what the artist members around me are doing, I simply value and appreciate the creative energy with and around me. You don’t need to be an artist to support and be a part of the Arts Council. Turns out there are a number of us who don’t “do” art, but we do know its value in a world that tries so very hard to wear us down. Please join us as a guest, a new member, an artist, or a community supporter; I think you will find you will really enjoy the company you keep!

Sponsor's Award: Grace Beamer, Troy Buchanan HS and Taylor Kallash, Logan Private Art Studio. They received a bag of Heritage Art items from Georganna Krumlinde.

Volunteers are needed to supervise kids participating in the Trash Can Cover Art Contest. Kids K-12 who are Wentzville residents, are invited to the WREC on Saturday, March 9th from 1-5 pm and Wednesday, March 13th from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. They will be creating their artwork inspired by "My Favorite Things to Do in the Park". Adults are needed to distribute paper, crayons and washable markers, and to supervise the kids. Set-up will begin 30 minutes before opening to the public. Chairs and tables will already be set up. Volunteers will cover each table with craft paper to protect the tables. Removing the paper and collecting the crayons and markers is the only cleanup required. We are in need of WASHABLE markers to donate. They can be dropped off at Crossroads Art Center Thursday through Sunday from 11-3 pm. Please email Laura Birk laurabirkann@gmail.com with the day and time you can volunteer for this art contest. We Need Your Help

CAC needs both curators and sponsors for our gallery shows. Sponsors cover the costs for our judges and awards (Student Spanning the Generations $360, all others $205). Curators are responsible for arranging a judge for their show, printing the entries and labels, and accepting and releasing the art. Curators and sponsors are needed for May - November 2024.

We are also in need of judges for our monthly themed shows. Judges can either accept payment for their service or select a “Judges Choice” Award to be presented to one entry.

Finally, volunteers are needed to docent when the galleries are open Thursday through Sunday from 11-3 pm. The docent is a host for guests visiting the galleries--they explain the theme of the show on exhibit, and may provide a simple tour of the art center. An orientation is provided by an experienced docent. It is a 4 hour commitment. Contact Kerry Kirkland at angstartr@gmail.com

A fun road trip to Grow2Gather Country Market and Crafts

It's always enjoyable to share time with other nonprofit organizations. Grow2Gather Country Market & Crafts supports special artists through their Montgomery County Sheltered Workshop. We enjoyed their delicious breakfast and then toured their workshops and their sheds of recycled items. It's well worth a trip. Their location is:

We've added a new gallery!

Artists have responded so well to the opportunity to have their own art show we have been able to dedicate additional space for display! The Studio Gallery includes approximately 400 linear inches of hanging hardware plus some built in shelves. It is available for rent for $50.

"Colors of Crossroads"

CAC Mural Contest

for CAC Members Only

The CAC Board of Directors has approved a proposal, pending approval from the City of Wentzville, for a mural to be placed on the exterior wall of the gallery. This multipiece metal mural will identify our building as an art gallery and also enhance the arts district of historical downtown Wentzville. Deadline is April 15. Artist entries must be a 16”w x 20”h canvas that depicts one of the 4 seasons of our regional scenery. We are looking for vivid imagery that will stand out to cars passing our building. Artists may enter up to 4 canvases. Please see details here:
