Dear Residents -

I hope you are enjoying what is left of the summer. I am resuming my introductions a bit early so that I can tell you about a special fundraising event Orangetown will be hosting on September 7, 2024 at 1 pm at Veterans Memorial Park – the Orangetown ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! Around the 10-year anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, I learned of a resident who had recently been diagnosed with ALS. Soon after, I was asked if I would take the Ice Bucket Challenge.

Knowing several residents who lost their battle with ALS, I knew that it was not enough for me to just take the challenge. I thought, let’s go big! That’s when a very clever member of my staff suggested we use the bucket at the splash pad. With that, it all came together—a family-friendly, community event with adults getting dunked on the splash pad.

There will be coffee, tea, hot chocolate and munchkins at the event, generously donated by the Pearl River Dunkin’. The Coney Express ice cream truck and the Bailey’s Smokehouse food truck will also be there with food for purchase. Other vendors are welcome!

So, please join us for what is sure to be a great day. For $25 you can get dunked while your family and friends cheer you on. Even better, you can create a team and get your friends and family to donate. Of course, you can also join an existing team—no pressure, but my team really needs all the help it can get! Whatever you choose to do, do it HERE.

I am proud to say that, as of the time of this writing, we have already raised over $9,300 for ALS United Greater New York! This organization builds hope and enhances the quality of life while supporting research to find new treatments and assisting people with ALS. So, come on Orangetown, I know we can do more!

Enjoy the weekend and keep those donations coming.

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Perpetual Monument Dedication at the James H. Anderson American Legion Post

On Sunday, the James H. Anderson American Legion Post 1199 dedicated its perpetual monument, the first in Rockland County. The monument stands as a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of the 13 Military Service Members who lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2021.

The service, which was held on the grounds of the James H. Anderson Field, was attended by numerous veterans and local organizations, to show their support for those who gave their lives in defense of the United States of America.

Schools are opening this coming week all around town. Consider leaving additional time for your morning commute as there will be additional cars, school buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians you will be sharing the road with.

Below are some safety tips that if followed will help keep everyone safe.

  • Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.
  • Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.
  • Eliminate distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example.
  • Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles.
  • Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.
  • Talk to your teen. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
