Farm Update: Spring Growth is in Full Swing!

As we bid farewell to the chilly days of winter, we welcome the gentle breeze and the budding blooms of spring with open arms! The Island Grown Farm is buzzing with activity as we embrace the growing season.

The indoor soil beds are bursting with greens such as spinach, kale, and arugula, thriving under the lengthening daylight hours. We've also kicked off the cultivation of tomato seedlings in the soil beds, with plans to transplant them within the coming month. Our field production has commenced, with onions, leeks, and celeriac recently seeded. Peas will go in soon. We're also gearing up to frost seed in some of our pasture spaces.

Our compost program is running smoothly, aided by our upgraded loader, as we gear up to spread approximately 400-500 yards of compost across our fields in the next month or two.

Meanwhile, our hydroponic lettuce in the greenhouse is set to resume production by the end of the month. We are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new batch of laying hen chicks within the next week or two to refresh our flock.

To say we are busy is an understatement but we so look forward to this time and the anticipation of spring and summer.

Welcoming New Board Members

We are proud to announce the appointment of Gail Arnold as our new Board Chair. Gail is passionate about all things food. She has been involved with Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry and has been a dedicated volunteer at the Island Food Pantry.

When asked about her new role Gail remarked, "I’m thrilled to step into the board chair role at IGI and to work with so many talented and enthusiastic board members. I first became aware of IGI in 2010 through the Island Grown Schools program and later became a volunteer at the Island Food Pantry. So, it was a privilege to then be asked to join the board. As a chef and an educator, I am struck by IGI’s motto 'Food is at the core of everything we do.' I have nurtured people through food nearly my whole life; collaborating with the board to support Island Grown’s mission of nourishing our community is an honor and a joy."

In addition to our new Board Chair, we are delighted to welcome Craig Barton, Elisa Cohen, Mary DeFreitas, Mark Luthringshauser, Jennifer Randolph and Mitch Rubin to our Board of Directors.
