MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR

Dear St. Augustine's 'ohana,

This Sunday, we mark second Sunday of Advent. This season of waiting brings to mind the many different ways in which we mark time in everyday life.

Whether we are standing in line at the grocery store or post office, waiting for a phone call, or expecting test results from the doctor, waiting can test our patience. Waiting does not always feel peaceful!

In this season, we are reminded of a different kind of waiting: an active waiting in faith. Faithful waiting means engaging our minds and spirits to watch for God in all circumstances, even those that might test our patience.

When we practice faithful waiting, we might be surprised what we'll notice in the grocery store, post office, or even in Costco! (Check out the story about finding God in Costco from last week's sermon.) Faithful waiting brings PEACE to our hearts as we seek (and find!) God in our midst.

This Sunday, we will focus on PEACE as we light the second candle of our Advent wreath. We will open our hearts to the peace already present in us, asking God to help us find it. We will stand together quietly to think about and feel peace, inviting peace into our lives and into the world.

Blessings,

Vicar Jennifer

P.S., I invite you to use this Advent calendar as a guide through each day of the season.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO

  • Donna Oba & Bob Morrison for cleaning the church and providing flowers this week.

ST. AUGUSTINE'S NEWS

KEIKI GIVING SPREE FUN!

What a fun weekend and wonderful way to start the Advent Season... in joyful community & with hearts full of wonder (and bellies full of cookies!).  Mahalo to everyone who came out for the Keiki Giving Spree.

Volunteers helped keiki shop and then wrap gifts for their grown-ups. It was sweet to see the excitement on their faces after picking the perfect gift and it was lovely to see the adults sit together in community on the Walker Hall lanai enjoying refreshments and talking story.

Mahalo to Kathy Matsuda for organizing the event and everyone on the volunteer team of shoppers and wrappers! For more photos and to add your photos, visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/kapaauHI

Sunday school is held every Sunday during the 9:00am service and open to all keiki ages 3-10. Hope to see you there!

MUSIC AT ST. AUGUSTINE'S: UNCLE FRANK PALANI CIPRIANI

On Sunday, December 3, Uncle Frank treated us to a wonderful mini concert of jazz and swing standards, complete with stories! He even took requests from the audience! Mahalo to Uncle Frank and to all who attended the concert and potluck!

The next mini concert is Sunday, January 7 at 5:30 pm with Wendy Hindley (flute), Vicar Jennifer (flute), and Kirk Corey (piano) playing a half hour of music for two flutes and piano by Madeleine Dring (1923-1977) and Franz Doppler (1821-1883). Potluck to follow in Walker Hall.

THE ECUMENICAL CHRISTMAS PARTY IS THIS SUNDAY!

St. Augustine's is excited to be hosting this year's Ecumenical Christmas Party on December 10 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sacred Heart's St. Damien Hall.

This is a wonderful chance for all of the Kohala churches to come together to celebrate the season. As always, the evening will feature an 'ono potluck and fun lineup of entertainment.

If you'd like to volunteer, please contact Kathy Matsuda for details. See you there!

If you have information to share, please let us know! This is a space to help us stay in touch in a variety of ways, such as news, offers of assistance, or garden bounty (fruits, veggies) you would like to share. Please email Vicar Jennifer or Kathy Webb: VicarJennifer@staugustineskohala.com or admin@staugustineskohala.com Submissions due by Thursday morning for Friday's newsletter.

CHRISTMAS CARDS—CREATION CARE FOR ADVENT

If you send Christmas cards, consider plantable cards. When the biodegradable paper is planted in a pot of soil, the seeds will grow and eventually the paper will decompose. (Available on Etsy.)

Other card possibilities? Make your own using the art from cards you received last year. Remember to avoid cards with glitter (more plastic that can’t be recycled). And you can always email your holiday greetings!

Mahalo to the Episcopal Church in Colorado for this week's Creation Care tip!
