THE METHODIST MESSENGER

Making disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately,

love extravagantly, and witness boldly.

Monday was a special day. It was the first time I can recall ever having been in the zone of totality (almost total darkness) during a solar eclipse. I was in Noonday, Texas which was mostly cloudy but there were also brief moments with breaks in the clouds. Prior to the eclipse, using the special glasses, you could see the moon moving to cover the sun for a just a few moments before the clouds returned. During the eclipse the clouds didn’t seem to matter much at all.  The twilight period lasted a good while, while darkness fell and receded very quickly.  What I noticed most during the eclipse were the last and first tiny spots of brilliant, pure white light emanating from the smallest portion of the sun which was still visible.  It was like a 1000-watt light bulb shining in a dark background. It was amazing.

Can you imagine the brilliance of Easter morning when the stone was rolled away? The Light of Life emerged with full intensity, beaming brightly. That light is still emanating from the very name of Jesus. He is the Light of the World. Our highest spiritual moments come when we don’t let anything get between us and Jesus.  This is, of course, hard to do. But, as the Apostle Paul said,

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13       He did not say I can do the easy things, and some of moderate things and a few of the hard things. He said, “ I CAN DO ALL THINGS!” The only condition was that he had do these things with and through Jesus.

If we let things like worry, anger and resentment cloud our lives we have a more difficult time seeing Jesus. The more eclipsed Jesus becomes, the less we are able to live like faithful disciples. The list of things in our lives that can obscure the Lord from our vision is endless. What is the answer? Pray and start with the most obvious obstruction to your faith. As it is has been said, “A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.”  I pray that our steps will allow us to travel far and wide and to have a crystal-clear vision of Jesus lifted high on his throne.  May nothing ever eclipse Jesus in your life, but if and when things happen, please know that clouds will come and go and very soon they will be gone, revealing another glimpse of glory.  It doesn’t take special glasses to see Jesus, only a little bit of faith. See ya Sunday!

"The light shines in the darkness for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it]" John 1:5 (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

These past two weeks have had the news in an uproar. The only thing that has actually come before politics has been news of the upcoming eclipse. People have paid overwhelming dollars to be in the path of "totality", just to say they were there in those few minutes of darkness. But there was a time more than 2,000 years ago when darkness did fall and the earth trembled. It happened at the moment Christ took His final breath on the cross, saying, "It is finished!" Can you imagine the fear of the people when this took place, especially to the followers of our Lord? In actuality, though, the death of our Lord and Savior on the cross was only the beginning for us. The glory and light that shines from our Lord is greater than any light our sun can give off, and it can never, never be dulled by the shadow of our moon. His life reflected the Father's plan to bring new life to all who would believe. It was the end of Christ's suffering, but the beginning of life everlasting with our Heavenly Father! How great is our God to perfect a plan giving the ultimate sacrifice for us? Today, no matter how dark our paths may seem, our Jesus, the Light of the world, will overpower and conquer darkness. May the few minutes of darkness from the eclipse serve as a reminder of our Father's love and power

forever and ever, AMEN!
