As we enter October, we recognize Substance Use Prevention Month, which is a time to emphasize the importance of preventing substance misuse in our community. Prevention is a tool, a resource, and an active commitment to nurturing healthier lifestyles. Through education and awareness, we can encourage taking small, meaningful steps that will lead to making big, impactful change.

Sober-Curious Young Americans May Be Changing the Conversation Around Alcohol | NIAAA Spectrum | |
According to data from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 68% of adults ages 21 and older in the United States drink alcohol. At the same time, researchers believe that the recent "sober-curious" movement may be encouraging some people to reevaluate their relationship with alcohol and the impact that drinking can have on their health. | |

In the past decade, movements like Dry January and Sober October have gained traction. Motivations may include seeking better sleep, cutting calories, and for some, taking steps to prevent cancer. In recent years, a growing body of evidence has linked alcohol to increased cancer risk.

A warmline is a nonemergency source of support for people experiencing increased stress or symptoms from mental health and substance use concerns.

Applications Now Open for 2024-2025 School-Based Peer-to-Peer Suicide Prevention Programs | |
Mental Health America of Wisconsin is offering a funding opportunity for elementary, middle, and high schools in Wisconsin. This opportunity is in addition to the Peer-to-Peer Suicide Prevention Grant through the Department of Public Instruction. With a focus on training Wisconsin students to recognize the signs of suicide shown by fellow students, peer-to-peer programs use messages of hope, health, and strength to develop peer leaders and resources for students who may be struggling. Applications are due October 11.

The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know.
This two-hour interactive introduction to suicide awareness and prevention will also cover statistics and intervention strategies. Hosted by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute, it will be held via Zoom from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on October 9 and on October 29.

Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. The Empowerment Coalition of Milwaukee (ECOM) is a monthly gathering of social services professionals, advocates, and consumers organized by Community Advocates Public Policy Institute. ECOM explores topics that are vital to Milwaukee’s human services professionals. This month's topic is Human Trafficking, Exploitation & Sex Work.

2024 Wisconsin Self-Determination Conference

The Self-Determination Conference is one of Wisconsin’s biggest events for people with disabilities and the people who support them. Last year, over 800 people attended the conference. Your support will help provide scholarships, interpreter and translation services, technology and a high-quality in-person experience. Please help the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities continue to empower Self-Advocacy and Self-Direction in Wisconsin. A project of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, love is respect offers 24/7 information, support, and advocacy to young people between the ages of 13 and 26 who have questions or concerns about their romantic relationships. Escucha tus Emociones
En 2022, con el apoyo del Community Advocates Public Policy Institute y el patrocinio de Better Ways to Cope, una iniciativa del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos del Condado de Milwaukee, “Escucha Tus Emociones // Listen to Your Emotions” realizó su primera capacitación integral sobre salud mental y emocional en español. Con capacitación diseñada e implementada por la psicoterapeuta bilingüe Ana Paula Soares, Escucha Tus Emociones es una iniciativa comunitaria gratuita que brinda información y educación cultural y lingüísticamente apropiada para la comunidad de habla hispana.
Utilizando un enfoque holístico, más de 60 promotores de salud, líderes comunitarios y profesionales de la salud han sido capacitados en temas relevantes para la comunidad latina, como el impacto de la inmigración, la aculturación y la discriminación en la salud mental y emocional. La capacitación permite a los profesionales de la salud ofrecer Pláticas gratuitas en la comunidad, ayudando a reducir el estigma y apoyando a nuestra comunidad Latinx aumentando el acceso a servicios de salud mental y emocional.
