Mina Memories by Greg Madsen: Questions and Answers

Answers kindly provided by Mary Norcross

In the December 28th Edition of the Tapestry, Greg Madsen supplied an article entitled "Mina Memories". A few questions were presented to the Tapestry about the locations of some of the places mentioned in his article.

If you missed this article here is a link to read it December 28, 2023 Tapestry

Thank you to our local historian, Mary Norcross, for answering these questions and more! Look for pictures of these historical places to come in a future Tapestry!

Reply From Mary:

Per the "Gunsmoke-Dodge City" references: The only fire truck was housed in the current building next to the Water Wheel Overlook building, this building was a former "Bath Shop".

There was no doctor but a chiropractor, Dr. Howard. His office was located in what is now the small building/private residence on 10373 Main Street next to Twin Docks. That may have been the telephone building with the plaque commemorating Chautauqua Erie Telephone Company.

Wink and Millie Keith's restaurant was located at 10371 Main Street, where Leanne Becker's art gallery, September Moon, was located.

The Mina Town Clerk, from whom you could purchase fishing licenses, was most likely Slaney Walford's mother, Kate Walford. As Town Clerk, she worked out of her home on Main Street.

The Post Office has been in several locations over the years, including where Twin Docks is and a bit later where Toast Wine & Spirits is located.

Bradley's Fleetwing Gas Station was located where Secret Cubby is at 10378 Main Street. The Magoon Brothers ran a gas station and car repair on the NW corner of Main Street and North Road. It is now the parking lot next to the Fire Hall. The Proctor Chevrolet business was where Our Own Candle Company's gift shop and Findley Lake Fashions is now located, on the NE corner of Main Street and North Road.

The Ten Hagen double storefront that housed a funeral home on the east side and a barber shop on the west side is now Toast Wine and Spirits on the east side, where Bud Noble had his wine shop and the west side where Judy Noble ran The Wonderments shop across the street from the fire hall at 10365 Main St.

The grain/feed mill on Shadyside Road, where you could grab a cold coke, was located where Findley Lake Marine is now.

The Findley Lake Roller Rink is to this day everyone's favorite memory! It was located on Sunnyside Road, just south of Krasa's Kove Ice Cream, on the same side of the road.

Thank you, Mary, for taking the time to place all the historical places with today's locations!
