Dear Residents –

I cannot believe that today is the end of the first quarter of 2023. From a quick glance at the calendar, there is no denying that April is going to be a very busy month.

And it starts tomorrow, with the annual Keep Rockland Beautiful cleanup day in Orangetown. This year the Town joined forces with the Tappan Fire Department to make the cleanup an even bigger success. For those interested, we will be meeting at the Tappan Fire House starting at 9:00 am tomorrow. For more information, please click here. For information about other cleanup dates, check out the Keep Rockland Beautiful website. Please consider joining us tomorrow and helping to do your small part to keep Orangetown beautiful.

Then on Tuesday, April 4, Holt Construction will be hosting a blood drive from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Pfizer Campus. As blood is in short supply, the New York Blood Center could really use your help. Won't you please sign up today?

On Wednesday evening, April 5, our friends of the Jewish faith will sit down with family and friends for their first Passover Seder of 2023. Chag Pesach Sameach!

Later this month, Dominican University will be holding a Spring Concert on April 16, 2023, featuring Bridgemusik faculty and students and, on April 22, 2023, St. Thomas Aquinas will be hosting an Earth Day Celebration. We are extremely fortunate to have these two institutions of higher education right here in Orangetown, and that they are both so enthusiastic about hosting community events that everyone can enjoy.

Enjoy your weekend everyone and hope to see you at the cleanup tomorrow.

Stay safe.

Regards,

Teresa M. Kenny

Afterwards, District Attorney Tom Walsh recognized two outstanding law enforcement officers from Rockland County. Haverstraw Police Department Chief Peter Murphy received the Cormach Murrihy Award and Retired Town of Ramapo Police Department Detective Robert Fitzgerald was given the Noel O'Connell Award.

Scammers use AI to enhance their family emergency schemes

You get a call. There's a panicked voice on the line. It's your grandson. He says he's in deep trouble — he wrecked the car and landed in jail. But you can help by sending money. You take a deep breath and think. You've heard about grandparent scams. But darn, it sounds just like him. How could it be a scam? Voice cloning, that's how.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a far-fetched idea out of a sci-fi movie. We're living with it, here and now. A scammer could use AI to clone the voice of your loved one. All he needs is a short audio clip of your family member's voice — which he could get from content posted online — and a voice-cloning program. When the scammer calls you, he’ll sound just like your loved one.

So how can you tell if a family member is in trouble or if it’s a scammer using a cloned voice?

Don’t trust the voice. Call the person who supposedly contacted you and verify the story. Use a phone number you know is theirs. If you can’t reach your loved one, try to get in touch with them through another family member or their friends.

Scammers ask you to pay or send money in ways that make it hard to get your money back. If the caller says to wire money, send cryptocurrency, or buy gift cards and give them the card numbers and PINs, those could be signs of a scam.
