UNL College of Architecture

NEWS & UPDATES

COLLEGE NEWS

I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving break and are refreshed and ready to take on the rest of the semester with renewed vigor. Today starts the beginning of Build-up week with our Student Advisory Board hosting several events for all students.

All Week: Hot Chocolate, Coffee and Snacks will be available in the Link! Take a break from your studies and enjoy a treat! We will have activities such as an Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt, Gingerbread Building, Polar Express Night and Alpha Rho Chi Office Hours. See details here.

Additionally, I have some building news to share with you all. Last week they started the active demolition of the Stacks which included taking steps to physically separate and brace the building for razing. With this in mind, we ask for your patience as construction noise volumes will continue at high levels until

Dec. 4. Certain parts of construction activities such as jackhammering will be paused during final reviews so students may present without disruption.

As you prepare for winter break, please do read Stephanie’s message regarding clean up. Plus, if you have space in the new studios in Architecture Hall East, please turn in your rolling cabinet keys to Kathlene Bateman or the front desk worker in the Dean’s Office before you leave for the semester. Individuals who do not turn in their studio desk keys will be charged a rekeying fee on their student accounts.

Finish Strong!

ADVISING CORNER

College Scholarship Applications DUE February 1st

Applications for College of Architecture Scholarships are due February 1st. For more information about scholarship applications click on this https://architecture.unl.edu/scholarship-information. Check your huskers.unl.edu email often for updates from Stephanie Kuenning on new scholarships!

Studio Cleanup

As you know, during the winter break, the studio spaces will be cleaned by the custodial staff in preparation for the spring semester. Students are required to assist in the effort by cleaning their studio space before they leave studio for winter break (by SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18).

All students are required to take ALL personal materials home over the winter break.

1)    No items may be left or stored in studio over the break.

2)    Your studio should be completely cleaned before leaving for break (by SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, at the latest).

3)    Please be sure to carry large items that students do not want to the trash!

The only exception to this rule will be for the THESIS students. Thesis students may keep their materials in studio over the break – all items must be removed from the floor and stacked neatly on their desks to allow the custodians to clean the space.

If you have questions about this, please do feel free to reach out to the Student Success Office.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Like many of you, I for one enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. It always seems to come just at the right time, allowing for time to “unplug”, regroup, and have much needed time with family and friends.

I have a lot to be thankful for. Professionally, I am very thankful for a supportive community in the College of Architecture, for a student culture of rigor and resilience and a career that allows me to be a lifelong learner that supports my passion for the discipline of design. It is a bonus that I have colleagues and students that both challenge me and provide me with delightful opportunities of creative discovery. I hope you enjoyed your time off and are ready to push hard and finish strong in the next couple weeks!

ARCHITECTURE

As we approach the studio/thesis reviews next week, I want to encourage you to attend as many reviews as possible. It is anticipated to be three days of thought-provoking conversations prompted by your work with each studio bringing a new and refreshing perspective on the future of architecture. The program is happy to host several guests in the building, including visiting external critics Farzad Hashemi (PSU), Josh Shelton (el dorado) and Heather Ligler (PSU). Please join me in welcoming them to our college.

By attending reviews, you will help build back a culture of student engagement. By attending you can participate in the dialogue at all levels of our program. By attending you can reflect on your own educational path. By attending, simply put, you will learn.
