Word from the Pastor: The Rood Speaks

The following is an Anglo-Saxon poem from the 8th century entitled, “The Dream of the Rood,” translated by Richard Hammer (1970). It is the earliest Christian poem written in Old English.

The Rood [cross of Christ] speaks:

“It was long past – I still remember it –

That I was cut down at the copse’s end,

Moved from my root. Strong enemies there took me,

Told me to hold aloft their criminals,

Made me a spectacle. Men carried me

Upon their shoulders, set me on a hill,

A host of enemies there fastened me.

“And then I saw the Lord of all mankind

Hasten with eager zeal that He might mount

Upon me. I durst not against God’s word

Bend down or break, when I saw tremble all

The surface of the earth. Although I might

Have struck down all the foes, yet stood I fast.

“Then the young hero (who was God almighty)

Got ready, resolute and strong in heart.

He climbed onto the lofty gallows-tree,

Bold in the sight of many watching men,

When He intended to redeem mankind.

I trembled as the warrior embraced me.

But still I dared not bend down to the earth,

Fall to the ground. Upright I had to stand.

“A rood I was raised up; and I held high

The noble King, the Lord of heaven above.

I dared not stoop. They pierced me with dark nails;

The scars can still be clearly seen on me,

The open wounds of malice. Yet might I

Not harm them. They reviled us both together.

I was made wet all over with the blood

Which poured out from his side, after He had

Sent forth His spirit. And I underwent

Full many a dire experience on that hill.

I saw the God of hosts stretched grimly out.

Darkness covered the Ruler’s corpse with clouds

His shining beauty; shadows passed across,

Black in the darkness. All creation wept,

Bewailed the King’s death; Christ was on the cross….

“Now you may understand, dear warrior,

That I have suffered deeds of wicked men

And grievous sorrows. Now the time has come

That far and wide on earth men honor me,

And all this great and glorious creation,

And to this beacon offers prayers. On me

The Son of God once suffered; therefore now

I tower mighty underneath the heavens,

And I may heal all those in awe of me.

Once I became the cruelest of tortures,

Most hateful to all nations, till the time

I opened the right way of life for men.”

Church Request

Friends, a member of the church (Gil Bailey) is needing to secure rides to attend the Sunday, 11:00 am service each week. His lives close to the church on Old Jonesboro Rd. We have a ride calendar (MealTrain) for folks to signup and drive. If you would be interested in helping please click here. Please note this is not to bring a meal, but to pick Gil up and return him home on a given Sunday morning. Thanks!

Pastor João shared a photo of a guitar class that takes place every Thursday at the church in Felipe Camarão! Our amigo Leandro, who we’ve watched grow up in the church the last 20 years, is the teacher! An outgrowth of their kids and teens ministry, they are equipping the next generation with the Word of God in their hearts, through instruments, and with their voices! This is a good reminder to pray and give thanks constantly for our mission partners and their sharing of the love of Jesus with the people they serve around the world in so many powerful, exciting, and creative ways!

In August of last year, we focused on the newly founded Shabach Beyond Center Nigeria, founded by Jerry & Rachel Sidi. With an overwhelming amount of support, Jerry was able to oversee the construction of a well that supports over 20,000 people in the Ungwan Boro community. With the project of digging one well complete, there continues to be a need to support the community and help the Shabach Center care well for the people in other ways. The digging of a second well would go a long way in continuing the work that has already begun. If you feel called to support this special mission, there will be an option for online giving with the Shabach Center being an option in the drop down menu. We will take up a physical offering on the last Sunday, March 31, 2024 in which you can use the offering envelopes and designate on the memo line ‘Shabach Beyond Center’.

We are collecting letters for our Confirmands and would love for you to be part of their great cloud of witnesses!

Since September 2022, these confirmation students have participated in weekly classes that have taught, informed, encouraged and challenged their faith. Watching them grow over the past two years and take ownership of their faith has been a joy and an inspiration!

On Sunday, May 5, 2024, the confirmation students will have the opportunity to proclaim their faith to our church family and become members of First Presbyterian Church. As we prepare for this special day, we are asking friends and family to send in cards and letters of spiritual encouragement to our confirmands. Letters are not limited to, but could include a story or memory, something about your own faith or ways your life has been impacted by knowing this student. We invited you to speak love and truth that will spur them on in their faith. The kind words you share will not only encourage them as they prepare to be confirmed but also be kept for years as a reminder that they are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses that will love, guide, and encourage them as they continue to run the race. (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Welcome New Members

Please help us welcome some of our newest members to the fellowship of First Presbyterian Church. Dr. Kevin Jenson, Charlotte Duff, and Bill & Gena Prince. We are blessed by the gifts they bring not only to worship, but the entire mission of FPC. You may find out more information about them through Realm our online directory.

We Need YOU...The Facilities Improvement Group has partnered with BurWil

Construction to survey members and anyone who attends our worship and programs. The survey, which is totally anonymous, is to identify strengths and areas of need in our church building and grounds. The information we gather will provide information about our worship and fellowship spaces that will guide us as we plan for the next 30-40 years of life in this building. The Facilities Survey will be available for completion (both online and via paper copies) beginning Friday, March 22 and run through Sunday, April 7. As part of the survey, you will have the option to request to be included in a Discovery Session, a 2-3 hour workshop (date to be determined) which will provide the opportunity to discuss your ideas in detail with others from our church family as well as the BurWil team. Scan the QR code below to go directly to the Survey, or pick up a paper copy in the church office or on the table outside the worship service you attend. Paper copies may be delivered anonymously to the Facilities Survey mailbox in the stairwell leading to the choir area.

Organist's Footnotes

On this Easter Sunday we begin and end our service of worship with music by George Frederick Handel (1685-1759). The “Larghetto” movement from Handel’s Viola Concerto (arranged for organ by Homer Whitford) creates a somber mood during which we can reflect on Christ’s priceless sacrifice for all of humanity. Then tenor soloist, Aaron Blake, will bring us the first notes of Good News by singing the short Recitative: “He Was Cut Off Out of the Living” and the Air: “But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul in Hell”, both from Handel’s monumental oratorio, Messiah.

Our opening hymn, “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” had its origin in a collection of hymns called Lyra Davidica (“Harp of David”), published in 1708. Most of the hymns in this collection were translations of German hymns. EASTER HYMN happens to be the only melody that has survived from the original 1708 publication. Later, for the Time with Children, the Children Handbell Ringers will play a short medley that includes this hymn.

Proving that some the most profound theological insights are often found in children’s hymns, our Response to the Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon for the next few weeks will be two stanzas from Natalie Sleeth’s beloved “Hymn of Promise”. You are also invited to sing with the Choir on their Offertory Anthem, “Rise to Sing! The Light Is Breaking”. Your music is found on the bulletin insert.

We conclude our Easter celebration with the singing of the hymn “Thine Is the Glory”. Handel composed this chorus for his oratorio Judas Maccabeus, which also happens to be name of the tune. Our singing will be accompanied by Trumpets, Trombones, Timpani, Cymbals, Organ, and Choir in a setting created by Robert Hobby. In addition to this hymn, we will close our service with Handel’s most famous work, the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah. -Bob Greene
