FROM THE HEADMASTER

Our library opening was an incredible testament to the strength and unity of our community as we proudly unveiled the "Vanessa Calderón-Rosado Library". The evening was filled with joyous music from our talented faculty, while current and founding board members joined together to mark this significant occasion. Friends, family, and donors alike contributed to the warm and vibrant atmosphere, making it a truly memorable event. Inspirational speeches from esteemed guests such as Dr. Ana Tavares and Liz Phipps-Soerio, alongside heartfelt words from members of our staff and the remarkable Alondra Bobadilla, Boston's inaugural Youth Poet Laureate, resonated deeply with attendees. Additionally, we celebrated the impactful collaboration between Ms. Alice Viera's AP Spanish class, 826, and I Learn America, highlighting the power of community partnerships in education.

The pinnacle of the evening came with the address from our esteemed honoree, Vanessa Calderón-Rosado, whose impassioned call to champion multilingual education and utilize the library as a beacon of empowerment for youth and families left a lasting impression. Her words inspired us all to redouble our efforts in advancing educational opportunities and amplifying voices within our diverse community. The event served as not only a celebration of a physical space but also as a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to fostering inclusivity, learning, and growth for generations to come.

Liz Phipps-Soeiro captured the essence of the evening with her remarks. Here is an excerpt:

“Libraries are a place of wonder. The ability to be curious is liberatory, and I again extend my gratitude to Librarian Madden-Fuoco, Principal Vazquez, Office of Academics, BPS administration, but especially to this community of students, families, and staff for creating a space and providing resources to nurture the curiosity and inquiry that children naturally bring with them. In a world that may seek to hinder these innate and beautiful inclinations, this community stands together as a beacon of support. Thank you.”

This excerpt from Ms. Bobadilla’s poem also left all inspired.

“In this space the doors of opportunity burst open for all and from all in this space democracy exists founded on the basis of truth and nothing below that standard in this space treasure is generously split up for all and this space should be loved, should be invested in, should be expanded, should be reimagined, should be protected, should be sustained.”

Attendees stayed past 8pm sharing stories, food and hearing from our students as they read their stories. To see the video of the event and hear the outstanding speakers, click the button below.

EXTRAORDINARY EXPEDITION

Ms. Marilú’s 12th-grade Spanish Humanities Class was all abuzz last week preparing and then presenting their live Literary Circles, bringing to life the novels they had recently read, in a variety of ways.

There were three main groups which were assisted by members of 826 Boston, who helps transform students into published authors, now an integral part of the Muniz Academy.

The TV News Program – the students presented the key events of the novel they had read, as TV commentators, breaking a news story.

A Live Interview Show - This group had the author of the novel being interviewed by a panel of experts, discussing the main points of the novel.

A Psychologists session – This group was made up of one psychologist and three patients: Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Wendy from Peter Pan. Through each original context, problems discussed in the novel are set forth and seen in a new way.

In preparation for their presentation, students also created new book covers for their novel of choice demonstrating the focus their literary circle placed on the content of their novel.
