STORIES AROUND THE TABLE

This year's Lenten Devotional features stories from parishioners about times they spiritually connected around the table with a loved one. We hope these stories invite you to reflect on times you experienced meaningful connection or the presence of The Spirit through the sharing of food and around the table.

Pecan Pie and Bread of Life

by David Romaine

March 28, 2023

At the 1986 Shrine Mont Family Conference, four priests were involved in an Olympic contest to see how many pieces of pecan pie each could eat. Two of the priests consumed six pieces a piece and the other two consumed seven pieces apiece. A lady was approaching them to lecture them about gluttony, and before she could say one word, one of the priests said to her “But this isn’t gluttony, it’s piety!” At the talent show the following night, I awarded each of these priests a small York chocolate covered peppermint patty.

Jesus tells us He is the bread of life, His flesh the real food, His blood the real drink. In experiencing Him this way, there is no stomach risk, but abundant life. The prayer life He calls me to 24/7 ensures that I don’t go hungry, but have this abundant life. This also insures my sugar watch.
