April 24, 7pm Zoom Program

To Register contact: programs@stoneridgelibrary.org

It has been said that an army travels on its stomach. Never was this more true than during the dark days of WWII. Join us as we present Victory Gardens with Jeffery Urbin, Education Specialist of the FDR Presidential Library.

Veges image

This Zoom program will examine the unprecedented contributions made by millions of ordinary Americans. They fought the war literally in their own backyards by growing food for themselves, the army and our allies in small plots known as Victory Gardens. Discussion will include: Where did the idea for these gardens come from? Why were they so necessary? What did the government do to encourage their creation? What was grown in Victory Gardens and how much did they really help?

Fork in the Road: Art Exhibition

Featuring Work by Incarcerated Artists

RTAwhite image

March 2 – April 29, 2023

Reception: Saturday, April 1, 1-3pm

Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) will present Fork in the Road, an exhibition featuring artwork by incarcerated individuals from correctional facilities in New York State. A brief presentation with the exhibition curator, RTA staff and formerly incarcerated artists of RTA’s visual arts program will take place at the reception.

The concept of the exhibition Fork in the Road—a moment of decision in life or history when a choice must be taken—was the vision of incarcerated participants of RTA’s visual arts program. The exhibition will feature 25-30 artworks from three (3) correctional facilities in New York State: Bedford Hills (women’s maximum security); Green Haven (men’s maximum security) and Woodbourne (men’s medium security) Correctional Facilities. The artwork was created in classes taught by RTA teaching artists Angela Tornello and Claire Wasserman, who also curated the exhibition.

The project is being supported in part by the NoVo Foundation and Arts Mid-Hudson (Ulster County Cultural Services and Promotion Fund).

About Rehabilitation Through the Arts:

The RTA model provides an intensive and comprehensive arts program that builds a sense of community, accountability and develops critical life skills so incarcerated participants can meet the challenges of connecting with family and community when released. RTA’s ongoing success is dramatic: Less than 5% of RTA members return to prison, compared to the national recidivism rate of 60%.

Founded at Sing Sing in 1996, RTA helps people in prison develop critical life skills through the arts, modeling an approach to the justice system based on human dignity rather than punishment. With a roster of over 30 professional teaching artists, RTA operates in six maximum and medium-security men’s and women’s New York State correctional facilities within a 150-mile radius of New York City, including Bedford Hills, Fishkill, Green Haven, Sing Sing, Taconic and Woodbourne. RTA teaches theater, music, dance, creative writing and visual arts to over 225 incarcerated men and women at any one time, with plans to expand its programs within New York State and beyond. Book Group

Wednesday, April 12

11am in the Activity Room

The book for April is

The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka. The swimmers are unknown to each other except through their private routines (slow lane, fast lane), and the solace each takes in their morning or afternoon laps. But when a crack appears at the bottom of the pool, they are cast out into an unforgiving world without comfort or relief. One of these swimmers is Alice, who is slowly losing her memory. For Alice, the pool was a final stand against the darkness of her encroaching dementia. Without the fellowship of other swimmers and the routine of her daily laps she is plunged into dislocation and chaos, swept into memories of her childhood and the Japanese internment camp in which she spent the war. Narrated by Alice's daughter, who witnesses her stark and devastating decline, The Swimmers is a searing, intimate story of mothers and daughters, and the sorrows of implacable loss, written in spellbinding, incantatory prose.

Wednesday, April 19

11am in the Activity Room

The book for April is

The Last Detective by Peter Lovesey. The naked body of a woman is found floating in the weeds in a lake near Bath. No one is willing to identify her. There are no marks and there is no murder weapon – a real test of the sleuthing ability of Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond. He is the last detective, not some lad out of police school with a degree in computer studies, but a genuine gumshoe whose heroes wore trilbies and raincoats and solved crimes by question and answer, doorstepping and deduction. Challenged by petty office politics, frustrated by obstructive tactics, Diamond strikes out on his own. Despite disastrous personal consequences, the last detective exposes the uncomfortable truth.

A History

Reading Club

Wednesday, April 26

Zoom meeting at 7pm

In April we will discuss

Poland: A Novel by James Michener. This novel chronicles eight tumultuous centuries as three Polish families live out their destinies. The Counts Lubonski, the petty nobles Bukowksi, and the peasants Buk are at some times fiercely united, at others tragically divided. With an inspiring tradition of resistance to brutal invaders, from the barbarians to the Nazis, and a heritage of pride that burns through eras of romantic passion and courageous solidarity, their common story reaches a breathtaking culmination in the historic showdown between the ruthless Communists and rebellious farmers of the modern age. Like the heroic land that is its subject, Poland teems with vivid events, unforgettable characters, and the unfolding drama of an entire nation.
