OOOOHHHH… and AHHHHH… are the sounds you'll hear when you mix your own colors to make Periwinkle. Why does this color resonant with so many people? Why are there so many diverse interpretations from artists when it comes to using this color?
But first, when I make my own Periwinkle color, I mix together Blue and Violet. Periwinkle is also known as: Lilac, Lavender Blue, Mauve and Pastel Purple - As you can see, depending on how you mix it - the ratio of each color - will give you a different hue.
You see the color Periwinkle in nature… the actual flowering plant has five petalled flowers and flossy green leaves. Psychologically speaking, Periwinkle has an intriguing emotional effect. It's something about the warm blue mixed with cool purple undertones - it has a very uplifting influence on our brains, with all the positive-feeling words: Cheerful, humorous and tranquil. Why wouldn't I want to paint with this color?
This BobBlast demonstrates how I mix and make my own Periwinkle. This quick and easy approach is achieved using Ultramarine, mixed with Holbein's Luminous Opera - or more commonly, Ultramarine and Alizarin Crimson. I prefer the extra kick of the Luminous Opera to make my personal shades of periwinkle.
I suggest you spend some studio time making your own color chart of all the shades of this spectacular color. Hang it up on your wall for reference,
So that's all the technical stuff. But for the artist (you) - it is just one more intriguing color for you to add to your GO TO colors… if you're looking for ooohhhs and ahhhhs…
