Out and About

Our new scholarship coordinator, Alicia Kangas; our data manager, Jenna Sommer; and board member, Mariah Pitka-Jenkins attended the Alaska Native Hire Job Fair at CITC’s Nat’uh Service Center in Anchorage earlier this month. We enjoyed meeting and talking with the attendees, and hope to offer support for their future educational endeavors!

GRATITUDE CORNER

Matthew Gho

Matthew Gho, of Chugiak, is not only a student pursuing his master’s of mathematics at the University of Northern Colorado – he is also a math instructor at the University of Alaska, where he helps high school students in the Middle College and ANSEP programs earn college math credits! “I appreciate Doyon Foundation’s financial support so I can continue to help students find success in earning their math credits for their chosen degrees,” said Matthew, who will graduate with his master’s degree in 2026. Watch next month’s e-newsletter for another student thank you or send your thank you note to scholarships@doyon.com.

LANGUAGE

Foundation to Take Doyon Languages Online in the Classroom

We’re taking Doyon Languages Online in the classroom! Our goal is to increase the capacity of schools in the Doyon region to teach Alaska Native languages, and provide more opportunities for students to learn their language. We’re excited to pilot the project with our partners at Effie Kokrine Charter School! This project is funded by a grant recently awarded by the U.S. Department of Education – Alaska Native Education program. Read more: bit.ly/DLOintheClassroom.

Rasmuson Foundation Helps Fund Molly of Denali Project

Doyon Foundation extends our deep gratitude to the Rasmuson Foundation, which recently awarded a $24,600 grant to help fund our Molly of Denali dubbing project. In cooperation with WGBH Boston, we are working to translate, rehearse and record four stories from the Molly of Denali PBS TV series in Denaakk’e and Gwich’in languages. Read more: bit.ly/DFRasmusonGrant.

NATIVE WORD OF THE MONTH

When learning a new word or phrase, it’s estimated that a person needs to hear/see/say it 20 times in 20 different situations. That is why consistent practice and repetition is so important for the teams in our Native language Mentor-Apprentice Program (MAP). In our MAP Handbook, we provide immersion phrases (like “say that again”) to help apprentices “stay in the language” while learning with their mentors. In this Native word of the month, we share a helpful immersion phrase in each of the 10 Native languages of the Doyon region: bit.ly/Sept22NWOM.

SUPPORT

Tectonic Metals Funds Resource Development Scholarships

Thank You, Duck Race Supporters

A big thank you to everyone who purchased ducks in the Great Alaska Duck Race, which took place September 10 in Anchorage. Our team sold a total of $3,940 in tickets! We’ll receive 50 percent for our scholarship program, and the other half goes to support the work of Alaska EXCEL, which serves rural Alaska youth with educational programs. We are also thrilled that TWO of our supporters were winners in the race! Tammany George won the $500 second place prize and Roxanne Frank won the $250 third place prize!
