Hymn of Invocation – A Mighty Fortress (656 LSB)

A mighty fortress is our God,, A trusty shield and weapon;

He helps us free from ev’ry need, That hath us now o’ertaken.

The old evil foe, Now means deadly woe;

Deep guile and great might, Are his dread arms in fight;

On earth is not his equal.

With might of ours can naught be done, Soon were our loss effected;

But for us fights the valiant One, Whom God Himself elected.

Ask ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is,

Of Sabaoth Lord, And there’s none other God;

He holds the field forever.

Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us,

We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not overpow’r us.

This world’s prince may still Scowl fierce as he will,

He can harm us none. He’s judged; the deed is done;

One little word can fell him.

The Word they still shall let remain, Nor any thanks have for it;

He’s by our side upon the plain, With His good gifts and Spirit.

And take they our life, Goods, fame, child, and wife,

Though these all be gone, Our vict’ry has been won;

The Kingdom ours remaineth.

Invocation

P: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C:  Amen.

Opening Sentences

P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord,

C.  who made heaven and earth.

P   I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,

C   and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Confession and Absolution

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C. I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with

which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal

punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I

pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter

sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful

to me, a poor, sinful being.

P. Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant

of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the

command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father

and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C. Amen.

C:  Amen.

First Reading – Revelation14:6-7

Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.”

P:  This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle – 1 Thessalonians -1-10

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.

We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you,  because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

  P: This is the Word of the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel – John 8:31-36

P:  The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter.

C:  Glory to You, O Lord.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

P:     This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:  Praise to You, O Christ.

Nicene Creed

C     I believe in one God,

    the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth

         and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

    the only-begotten Son of God,

    begotten of His Father before all worlds,

    God of God, Light of Light,

    very God of very God,

    begotten, not made,

    being of one substance with the Father,

    by whom all things were made;

    who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

    and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

    and was made man;

    and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

    He suffered and was buried.

    And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

         and ascended into heaven

    and sits at the right hand of the Father.

    And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

    whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

    the Lord and giver of life,

    who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

    who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

    who spoke by the prophets.

    And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

    I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

    and I look for the resurrection of the dead

    and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Children’s HymnGod is so Good (AGPS 107)

God is so good, God is so good

God is so good, He’s so good to me.

He cares for me, He cares for me

He cares for me, He’s so good to me.

He loves me so, He loves me so

He loves me so, He’s so good to me.

Children’s Sermon – Pastor Scott

Hymn of the Day The Church’s One Foundation (644 LSB)

The Church’s one foundation,  Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is His new creation, By water and the Word.

From heav’n He came and sought her,  To be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

Elect from ev’ry nation, Yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth.

One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses With ev’ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder, The world sees her oppressed,

By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed,

Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, “How long?”

And soon the night of weeping, Shall be the morn of song.

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of pow’r and might:

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

P:  Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

The Words of Our Lord

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My + body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My + blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P:  As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

C:  Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

P:  O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord’s Prayer

C:  Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini

P:  The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C:  Amen.

Distribution

Distribution Hymn By Grace I’m Saved (LSB 566)

By grace I’m saved, grace free and boundless;

My soul, believe and doubt it not.

Why stagger at this word of promise?

Has Scripture ever falsehood taught?

No! Then this word must true remain:

By grace you too will life obtain.

By grace! None dare lay claim to merit;

Our works and conduct have no worth

God in His love sent our Redeemer,

Christ Jesus, to this sinful earth;

His death did for our sins atone,

And we are saved by grace alone.

By grace God’s Son, our only Savior,

Came down to earth to bear our sin.

Was it because of your own merit

That Jesus died your soul to win?

No, it was grace, and grace alone,

That brought Him from His heav’nly throne.

By grace! This ground of faith is certain;

As long as God is true, it stands.

What saints have penned by inspiration,

What in His Word our God commands,

Our faith in what our God has done

Depends on grace—grace through His Son.

 By grace to timid hearts that tremble,

 In tribulation’s furnace tried,

By grace, in spite of fear and trouble,

The Father’s heart is open wide.

Where could I help and strength secure

If grace were not my anchor sure?

By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying;

In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;

For though I know my heart’s condition,

I also know my Savior’s voice.

My heart is glad, all grief has flown

Since I am saved by grace alone.

Post-Communion Collect

P: Let us pray.  O God, our refuge and our strength, You raised up Your servant Martin

Luther to reform and renew Your Church in the light of Your living Word, Jesus Christ,

our Lord. Defend and purify the Church in our own day, and grant that we may boldly

proclaim Christ’s faithfulness unto death and His vindicating resurrection, which You

made known to those in every age who have renewed Your Church by recalling us to this

eternal Gospel; through Jesus Christ, our Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

Benediction

P:  The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C:  Amen.

Closing Hymn – Faith and Truth and Life Bestowing (584 LSB)

Faith and truth and life bestowing

Open now the Scriptures, Lord

Seed to life eternal sowing

Scattered on the wind abroad

Let not hearts, your Word receiving

Like a barren field be found

Choked with thorns and unbelieving

Shallow earth or stony ground

May the Spirit’s power unceasing

Bring to life the hidden grain

Daily in our hearts increasing

Bearing fruit that shall remain

So in scripture, song and story

Savior, may your voice be heard

Til our eyes behold Your glory

Give us ears to hear your Word.
