November 2023

Great Art Inspired by Water

Celebrating a year long suite of exhibitions and programs that explore our relationship to the flora and fauna of the mysterious and brilliant underwater world.

Re/Framing Programming Weekend

November 2 - 4, 2023

Drawn from six private collections, the New Bedford Whaling Museum collection, and six strategic institutional loans, Re/Framing the View includes works by William Bradford, John F. Kensett, Martin Johnson Heade, Frederic Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt, Jasper Francis Cropsey, George Inness, Francis A. Silva, and Sanford Robinson Gifford, among many others. While the exhibition celebrates the work of these artists, it also offers a layered interpretation of the cultural and historical meaning of such paintings. By interrogating the place of gender, race and ethnicity, as well as environment and ecology, we re/frame the view and stage meaningful conversations about historical and contemporary issues and events.

Water Music: Chamber Concerts at the MMAM - The Big Catch

Thursday, November 9   |   7pm  |   $25

MMAM and the Winona Symphony Orchestra bring you Water Music, an evening that marries two art forms and celebrates their shared inspiration. Be immersed in the exhibition Art for Fish/Art for Humans by Kristian Brevik, on November 9, with a concert inspired by Breviks’ work titled, The Big Catch. The program for this evening centers around Schubert's masterpiece for piano and strings, the "Trout" Quintet. Complementing the Schubert are two works by American composers, Libby Larsen and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

Brevik Gallery Interactive

The interactive components of exhibitions allow visitors to engage with the art in a different and impactful way. In Kristian Brevik: Art for Fish/Art for Humans, visitors are invited to layer materials, and experiment with color, texture, shadow and light. “The interplay of shadow and light echoes the shadow and light of many of our relationships with other species,” says artist Kristian Brevik.

Give to the Max, November 16

Make your gift matter by making a donation to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum’s 2023 Anchor Campaign | Annual Fund, on Tuesday, November 16 - Minnesota’s GIVE TO THE MAX day! MMAM joins 14,000 other Minnesota nonprofit organizations who collectively join efforts to celebrate Minnesota’s largest philanthropic effort of the year. Last year, MMAM raised over $1,900 from 37 contributions on Give To The Max Day. We’re aiming to double that effort this year. We’re close to meeting our goal of raising $100,000.00 through the Anchor Campaign, but still have a way to go to meet our year-end giving effort and need your support! If every member stepped up to go above and beyond their annual membership gift by contributing directly to the Anchor Campaign, (gifts as little as $20 make a difference), MMAM would meet its goal. Join the tens of thousands of supporters who step up every November 16 to raise over $300 Million for Minnesota’s nonprofit organizations. It’s what makes our state a great place to live, work, create and play!
