Housing Workshop Draws Big Crowd as Planning Board Develops a Zoning Amendment

The Planning Office thanks the nearly 100 participants who attended last week's Planning Board Housing Workshop. Participants worked together to map solutions by identifying protentional zoning locations for higher-density housing, as required by a new state law. The resident-created maps and feedback received will be used to help the Planning Board formulate a zoning amendment.

The Planning Board will continue the discussion at their next meeting on November 9 and intends to discuss this topic at their regularly scheduled meetings going forward. The Planning Board welcomes and encourages continued public comments.

The marked-up maps, video, presentation, and more information can be found at LexingtonMA.gov/MBTAZoning

You may share further ideas with Planning staff to forward to the Planning Board by emailing Planning@lexingtonma.gov.

Green Your Halloween at Lexington's First Town-wide "Pumpkin Smash" Event November 4

What will you do with your pumpkin after Halloween? You could put it in with your yard waste, but how much more fun would it be to smash it? All smashed pumpkins will be composted by Black Earth Composting.

Friday, November 4 from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Lincoln Park, 100 Lincoln Street

When you compost your pumpkin, you are reducing waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating a valuable amendment for our soils. It's going to be a smashing time!

Make sure you remove any candles or decorations from your pumpkin (no paint or glitter, please).

Sponsored by LPS Green Teams and the Town of Lexington.

Pat Flynn Youth Award Established

On Sunday, October 3, the creation of the Pat Flynn Youth Award was announced. The award honors Winston “Pat” Flynn, war hero and outstanding Lexington citizen, who was remembered in a ceremony with full military honors.

Jim Ramsey, Executive Committee member of the sponsoring organization Lexington Veterans Association, announced that the Pat Flynn Youth Award Fund has been created, to be managed by the Town of Lexington. Each year on Patriots’ Day, an outstanding student will receive a generous cash award from this fund.

At their October 24 meeting, the Select Board voted in favor of establishing the fund.

The award will be a collaboration among the Lexington Veterans Association, Mrs. Edith Flynn, the Town of Lexington, and the Lexington Youth Commission. Doris Kraemer, friend and advisor to Edith Flynn, will establish the award criteria, publicizing the award, identifying candidates, and assembling the judges’ panel.

Donations to the fund may be sent directly (and made payable to) the Town of Lexington with the Pat Flynn Youth Award Fund on the memo line. They can be dropped off at the Select Board Office, 1625 Massachusetts Ave.

MBTA Releases Revised Bus Network Map

The MBTA has released a revised Bus Network Map, which is also available at mbta.com/BNRD. The Revised Network Map was developed based on feedback received on the Draft Bus Network Map released in May 2022.

In May 2022, the Bus Network Redesign Project released a Draft Bus Network Map and sought public feedback. Over the spring and summer, over 20,000 comments were received on the Draft Bus Network Map. The Project team has reviewed and incorporated that feedback into the Revised Bus Network that is being released today.

The Revised Bus Network continues to increase service by 25% across the system and doubles the number of high frequency corridors, which are defined as corridors in which buses arrive every 15 minutes or better throughout the entirety of the service day, seven days a week.

Service in Lexington remains the same as it traditionally was pre-COVID, with the addition of #62 bus service on Sundays. Also, compared to today’s level of service, the 76 is proposed to come back to midday service (currently at midday, the 62 & 76 combine into one route called the 62/76.)
