Singer-songwriter Terre Roche of the legendary NYC sibling folk trio, The Roches has announced the release of INNER ADULT, a collection of brand-new songs written and performed by Terre. The 13-track album arrives digitally Friday, May 17th.
INNER ADULT will also be released as a limited-edition book featuring illustrations by Terre, song lyrics, photographs, and more (all book purchases receive a digital download of the album).

“These songs were recorded on the island of St. John in the US Virgin Islands last September during the height of hurricane season,” said Roche. “Many people leave the island and shutter their houses for September. I decided to stay.
“I live on St John and also in Manhattan. On the soulful and deserted island last September I came face to face with songs I’d written over the past 4 years. In a sense I’ve been out of harness, no longer under contract to anyone – no managers, no agents, no record company, no real demand for me to write. Yet I was surprised to realize the songwriting urge had forged on unprompted.
“Allen Clapp, a musician known for his group The Orange Peels, had recently moved from California to St John with his wife and bandmate Jill Pries. He built a studio in their home. I asked if I could come and record my songs – just me and my guitar. I wasn’t thinking to make an album. Allen recorded the songs beautifully and each one was a first take. When I listened to the whole group I realized I wanted to release them as an album.
“What are the songs on Inner Adult about? I’d say they are about all the things that float around in my mind, and probably in yours too! Since my years with The Roches, when I was usually the top harmony, my voice has gotten lower, deeper, and more expressive. It tells me how to sing, rather than me browbeating it to stay soaring around in the sky.
I listened to this new old voice and asked, ’Who are you?’
’Inner Adult,‘ it answered.”

ABOUT TERRE ROCHE:
Terre Roche is a singer, songwriter, guitar player, teacher, author, innkeeper, and founding member of The Roches and “Afro-Jersey,” Terre has performed in many clubs and concert halls throughout the US and Europe and appeared on numerous TV shows over the course of her 50-plus year career. She is a co-creator with jazz pianist Garry Dial of "Us an' Them," a collection of national anthems from 16 nations. Her composition, "Star of Wonder," has become a favorite repertoire piece in choirs around the world and is now published by E.C. Schirmer. At the other end of the spectrum, Terre shrieked her way to modest cult status as the voice on Robert Fripp's album Exposure. She sang the role of Squeaky Fromme in John Moran's avant-garde opera The Manson Family. Terre is the author of Blabbermouth, a memoir about her surprising journey coming-of-age as a female musician in the 1970's. She has worked with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Linda Ronstadt, Meredith Monk, Don Was, The Muscle Shoals Swampers, Robert Fripp, Tracey Ullman, Kathy Mattea, and Garry Dial among others. Terre’s first solo album The Sound of a Tree Falling was released in 1998. Imprint, a collection of original compositions performed with bassist Jay Anderson, was released in 2015.
In 2022, Terre released Kin Ya See That Sun an audio album of live recordings of Terre and her sister Maggie doing arrangements of songs they did when they were teenagers traveling around the country to play on the college coffee house circuit. The album contains many of the songs from Terre and Maggie’s debut duo album Seductive Reasoning as they were originally arranged, for just two voices and two guitars. The digital audio release is also part of a book with lyrics, photographs, drawings, and recollections from various people who remember Terre and Maggie from way back when.
