BarroDesign by Caterina Moretti

for Graypants

caterina-07 image

For Peca, an independent design studio based in Guadalajara, Mexico, it’s all in the details. Since 2007, Head designer and studio director Caterina Moretti has infused the brand with her unique ability to work with natural materials, explore texture and form, and bring nature indoors in surprising ways. Collaborations with local artisans and invited designers have contributed to the spirit of Peca, resulting in a catalogue that is rich in both tradition and innovation.

Caterina has the ability to focus her vision on the tiniest details of her furniture, accessories and interior design projects, while simultaneously looking to the horizon to direct her design studio. As a designer, her inspiration is in nature, in raw materials that offer multiple possibilities of shapes and textures, and in their ability to be transformed into everyday objects. Her passion for texture and contrast has translated into a range of objects that infuse the organic and subtle with an original point of view, always provoking a contemplative twist. Peca’s presence in awards, exhibits and retail spaces around the world is due to the careful selection of artisans and guest designers that Caterina chooses to work with, as well as her unique spirit that allows her to flow in unexpected directions.

Vivarium Lighting

with Newstar

A Vivarium is a specially designed building type, which accommodates exquisitely controlled environments for the care and maintenance of experimental animals. Animal research facilities are related to but distinct from research laboratories.

Red LED lighting is ideal for animal research laboratories. This new spectrum of light, 630nm, maintains sleep cycles for nocturnal animals such as mice and rats. Research facilities commonly use rodents for study, and therefore must address the issue of proper lighting for these nocturnal animals. Studies indicate that the timing and duration of light and dark cycles (called a photoperiod) influences the body weight and food intake of laboratory animals. It also can induce a shift in the circadian rhythms of blood pressure, heart rate and activity.

Since red light is invisible to rodents (and to some other research animals), it is used at times when white light would disrupt activity cycles.

Fire Rated Light Enclosures

When & Why with Tenmat

TENMAT offers a unique range of flexible, lightweight and ready-to-use products and solutions for the most demanding firestopping applications.

Intumescence is the process or act of swelling. Tenmat covers react in a fire by expanding and forming a thicker and more insulating product. The expanded fibers will fill up the entire cover and seal off the gap left by the molten metal fixture. The picture below shows a piece of Tenmat Firefly intumescent material before and after exposure to heat. The material is heat activated at a temperature of around 400°F and expands to form a highly insulative tough char.

tenmat_firefly_intumescent-300x225 image

Benefit to using Tenmat vs

building Drywall or Sheetrock Boxes around the Fixture

Building Drywall or Sheetrock Boxes around light fixtures is the old-fashioned method of trying to fire rate light fixtures. This method was used as no ready to install products were available on the market. Today Tenmat’s pre-approved and ready-to-use covers set the high standard in passive fire protection.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above the Tenmat cover eliminates the dust caused when cutting the boards to build a fire rated light box. The light fixtures are often installed in ceilings where pipes, conduits, wiring and joists are in close proximity. The flexible cover makes this type of installation easy.

Emergency Egress Lighting

How to set up your system and what you need to know

02-EMERGENCY-essential-header-980x277 image

Egress” is a term meant to describe exiting / getting out of a place. You may hear the term “path of egress” or “means of egress” to describe the actual hallway that directs people to safety during power outages, for instance. (This is in contrast to the word “ingress,” which describes getting inside, e.g. electronics that safeguard against water getting into them are said to have ingress protection and use “IP” ratings to indicate how water resistant they are, etc.)

However, emergency / egress lighting solutions are those that illuminate paths of egress and/or indicate to building occupants what the fastest exit route is in which direction when there’s an outage or emergency. This can take the form of Emergency LED lighting solutions, LED Exit signs (with or without chevrons) or combination EXIT and Emergency lighting to provide a path of egress during outages.
