RESEARCH AND SPONSORED PROGRAMS | SEPTEMBER 2024

To help sustain its upward trajectory in grants and contract activity, Fresno State has updated its Internal Proposal Deadline Policy for submitting external funding proposals. This policy allows our research administrators to review budgets thoroughly, check institutional compliance, and meet sponsor guidelines for required components.

  • Standard submissions (including contracts): Intent to Apply form due to RSP no later than 21 business days before the sponsor’s due date. All administrative portions of the proposal must be complete no later than 10 business days of the sponsor’s due date.
  • Collaborative proposals: Intent to Apply form due to RSP no later than 30 business days before the sponsor’s due date. All administrative portions of the proposal must be completed no later than 10 business days from the sponsor’s due date.

Complete and final proposals received less than the respective deadline in advance of the sponsor’s due date will be reviewed only on a “First In, First Out” basis subject to proposals already received and other existing commitments. Complete and final proposals received with less than five (5) business days before the sponsor’s due date will not be submitted.

Abiding by these internal deadlines helps to ensure a successful proposal submission and avoids negative impacts on other faculty submitting proposals caused by the diversion of staff resources to support late proposals. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions.

LAVAL AWARD PRESENTATION

All are invited for a presentation by 2024 Claude C. Laval III Award for Commercialization of Research, Innovation, and Creativity recipients Santanu Maitra (Chemistry and Biochemistry) and David Lent (Biology), who will be speaking on Thurs., Oct. 10, at 2:30 p.m. in Library 2134.

The award-winning project focuses on the development of small-molecule repellents of

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) as a combating technique. The research team has been working on the synthesis, structural studies, and biological evaluation of analogs of N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) – a mosquito repellent that also repels fruit flies.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Be sure to check out BoNhia Lee's article in FresnoStateNews on another record-setting year for research funding at Fresno State. BoNhia visited with Cory Brooks (Biochemistry), who specializes in researching antibodies for treating pancreatic cancer. Thanks to a $242,073 grant from the National Institutes of Health, Brooks and three other Fresno State biochemistry faculty were able to acquire a surface plasmon resonance instrument platform.

“Now, we can bring that capability here. That’s very exciting,” Brooks said. “These instruments have been around for a long time but most of the instruments have very expensive maintenance associated with them. This one, because of the design, requires basically zero maintenance, so it’s perfect for undergraduate research.”
