The State of SNRS 2024
The Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) held its 38th annual conference from February 21-23, 2024 in Charlotte, NC at the beautiful Le Meridien-Sheraton Hotel. I want to extend my sincere appreciation on behalf of the entire Board of Directors to the following Host School Diamond Level sponsors: Florida State University College of Nursing, University of Central Florida College of Nursing, UNC Charlotte School of Nursing, and UTMB School of Nursing. We have been working with our management team at Association Conference Group (ACG) for almost two years now, and in that time, we have grown in sponsorships from $32,875 in 2022 to $137,549 in 2024! Our organization had 502 members in 2022 and now has 842 members. The top 10 states in terms of the number of members are Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, and Arkansas. Further, we had 304 registrants for our conference in 2022 and we had 450 in 2024. We received $137,540 in conference registrations in 2022 and in 2024, we received $195,921. In terms of assets, we have recovered from the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and are on solid financial ground again. We have seen great growth in our organization, and we extend our gratitude to the ACG leadership team for the hard work in assisting us with achieving our goals.
While we will review our Strategic Goals over the upcoming year to determine any changes that need to be made, at present our strategic goals remain to assure a robust and engaged membership, assure the financial stability of the organization, and increase organizational effectiveness. To lead these efforts, I was recently installed as President of SNRS, Mercy Mumba is now the President-Elect, Pamela Ashcraft is now the Secretary/Treasurer, Demetrius Abshire is the Director of Development, Ashley Rivera remains as the Director of Communications, and Vicki Loerzel remains as the Director of Grants. To complete our 2024 Board, we have Suzanne Prevost as our Vice President, Sara Davis as our Director of Membership, Kyungeh An as the Director of Career Development/Awards, and Miriam Ezenwa as Director of the Research Interest and Implementation Groups (RIIGs). Ann Hammack Johnson and Susan Letvak will join our Succession Planning and Nominations Committee.
Our members have amazing talents that could benefit our organization, provide a venue to give back, network, build new connections, increase engagement, and a path to leadership within SNRS. We need each member to continue our success and growth – in short, WE NEED YOU! There are several committees to engage in as we cannot do the work without our membership. I encourage everyone to complete the SNRS Committee Interest form by clicking here and volunteer for this great organization today. The open leadership positions in SNRS for 2024 include Vice President, Vice President-Elect, Director of Membership, Director of Career Development/Awards, Director of RIIGs, and two open Succession Planning and Nominations Committee positions. If you are interested in one of these leadership positions and have been a member of SNRS for at least two years, please consider nominating yourself or someone else today. It is helpful for nominees to have been actively involved in SNRS and have experience serving on committees. If you would like to nominate yourself, please submit a completed consent to serve form with your CV and a brief (limit 200 words) campaign statement including a brief summary of your research experiences, your prior leadership experiences, and your reasons for seeking a leadership position in SNRS. All nomination packet materials can be received from and/or questions about nominations can be directed to Marti Rice at schauf@uab.edu.
The 39th annual conference will be held in Memphis, Tennessee on February 19-21, 2025, at the historic and beautiful Peabody Hotel. The SNRS Planning Committee and the Local Planning Committee are already working diligently to create a great conference experience for you and facilitate excursions so that you might be able to visit the National Civil Rights Museum, the legendary Stax Music Academy, the historic Slave Haven Museum, historic Sun Studio and/or Graceland. 2024 SNRS Annual Conference Recap | |

Thank you to everyone who attended the 38th SNRS Annual Conference held February 21-23 in beautiful, downtown Charlotte, NC. Over 460 attendees joined SNRS for three days of sessions centered around the theme “collaborating to advance nursing research, education, leadership, and practice”. There were over 150 symposium presentations and over 170 posters presented in the three poster sessions. Our sincere appreciation to our Keynote Speaker, Dr. Vincent Guilamo-Ramos for his presentations on Conceptualizing the Mechanisms of Social and Structural Determinants of Health: Future Directions for Nurse-led Mitigation of Health Inequity.

2025 Abstract Submissions | |

Call for 2025 Abstracts – Please note the new schedule for Abstract Submissions:
Get your research ready for the call for abstracts for the 2025 SNRS Annual Conference. Keep an eye on your email and SNRS social media for the coming abstract submission cycle. This year – the primary abstract submission portal will open May 5, 2024, with a deadline of August 1, 2024. During this time, researchers of any level, including students, may submit abstracts for consideration for the following types of presentations:
- Completed Research (platform and posters),
- Completed Evidence-Based Practice (platform and posters),
- Research-Related Topics (e.g. methodology, special populations, mentoring, dissemination, etc.)
- Symposia – (3 or more papers with a common theme)
- Pre and Post Conference Workshops
The Late Breaker Submission cycle will open August 5, 2024, with a deadline of September 5, 2024. This second submission cycle is only for student projects, which may be completed or works in progress. Abstracts received during the second cycle, will only be considered for poster style presentations.
SNRS will also have a new abstract management system this year called SessionBoard. More information to come with the opening of the abstract submissions.

SNRS New Website and Member Portal Coming Soon!
SNRS is implementing a new association management system called MemberLeap in the next couple of weeks. We ask for your patience as the new website is created and all our data is loaded into the new system. There will be a date when we will no longer be using the old system and we will notify you at this time.
The new system will provide members with a user-friendly interface and an expanded member only area.

SNRS 2023 Research Grant Recipient | | |

Congratulations to the 2023 SNRS Research Grant recipient, Mary Ann Leavitt, PhD, MSN, RN, CCRN, CHFN, from Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.
Her research, The development of flexible wearable sensors to alert for heart failure decompensation and reduce hospital admissions, Phase 2: Sensor Validation, will receive funding of up to $7,500 from SNRS.

SNRS/Sigma Doctoral Research Grant
Due APRIL 1, 2024
SNRS and Sigma have a strong and mutual interest in promoting nursing education research conducted by doctoral nursing students and have agreed to offer a joint award focused on the following goals:
- Select and award a meritorious nursing research dissertation proposal,
- Increase the quality and quantity of nursing education focused research, and,
- Support the advancement of the science of nursing education.
This is an annual award of $5000 to support completion of one nursing student's dissertation work. Funds for this award are provided by the SNRS and Sigma. The recipient also receives a one-year student membership from Sigma.
