Educators from Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties gathered on Saturday, November 5th for a poverty simulation hosted by the Ossining Staff Development Center in collaboration with the Lower Hudson Teacher Center Network.
The annual simulation event provided powerful insight into the experience of families living in poverty and/or Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed (ALICE).
During the event, participants were able to experience the barriers to services, food security, housing, transportation, and childcare.
The result of the simulation was greater empathy for the struggles families face and how barriers to services affect family school involvement and their children’s attendance and participation.
