DCCA Ongoing Information Series: Homelessness in Dupont Circle
The DCCA is hosting a 6 session series on the issues facing people without children who are experiencing chronic homelessness in the Dupont neighborhood. The sessions will cover topics ranging from the structural problems in DC’s housing market and social safety nets that are leading to an increase in homelessness, the individual challenges of mental health and substance abuse, the impact of COVID, the costs of addressing the issue more effectively and the very particular difficulties faced by people of color, women and LGBTQ youth.

The intention is that each of the topics is examined in a practical way so that those participating in the discussions will leave with the information that they need to help, to campaign for change and to support progress towards ending homelessness. The overall objective is to have a better informed community - a community that is better positioned to lobby or take action on the basis of facts.  Registration for the series is now closed.

March Membership Meeting

The March Membership Meeting speaker line up includes...

Bijan Verlin, who is part of a 4-person Community Action Team in the public schools’ Communication and Engagement Office and will discuss DCPS' response to to Covid 19. Bijan and the other team members are each responsible for:

  • Building relationships with key community stakeholders, and
  • Assisting stakeholders in obtaining information and resources from the DC Public Schools’ central office and communicating external needs and trends back to DCPS.

Each Community Action Team member coordinates with a number of our public schools and their communities throughout the city. Bijan gets to stay in touch with communities in 26 schools, including but not limited to Ross Elementary School in our neighborhood.

DC COVID-19 Updates and Response
As always you can find the DC Government's COVID-19 informational page here. The page contains continually updated news, resources, testing sites and data on the public health emergency.

Council member Pinto recently shared the news that over 3,500 Ward 2 residents aged 65 and older have received their first dose of the vaccine, and the federal government also announced that additional vaccines have been secured for DC. Individuals who work in a grocery store setting, health and human services and social services outreach, manufacturing, and food packaging became eligible to register for vaccination appointments this week. Virtual Meeting to Discuss Massachusetts Avenue Rehab

DDOT is holding a virtual public meeting to discuss construction for the Rehabilitation of Massachusetts Avenue NW Project (from 20th Street to Waterside Drive). An overview of the project, the construction plan, work details, schedule, maintenance of traffic approaches and other construction information will be presented at this meeting.  To learn more click here for the flyer.

The Washingtonian selected some of its favorite submissions to the COVID-19 Viral Arts project. The project also brings awareness to artists and designers across the world whose work and financial situation have been impacted by the pandemic.

DC Public Library’s Most Popular Titles Dealing with Race by Black Authors
The Library has compiled a list of the most popular titles by Black authors in the past year whose writings deal with race.

Overall, the most popular title was the eAudiobook So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo.So You Want to Talk About Race aims to spark an honest discussion about how race and racism impact almost every aspect of American life. Oluo's book was among the titles the Library offered unlimited copies of following the murder of George Floyd in June. Since then, Oluo's book was roughly one out of every ten books borrowed on the Library's top Black authors list.
