Community Food Collaborative Helps the Food Insecure
The Community Food Collaborative (CFC) is celebrating its 7th year and having a very busy and productive year. The garden operates under the guidance of a 10-member committee with Joe Coan serving as President of the CFC. While growing organic vegetables sounds pretty easy, there are important tasks that must be done to maintain the garden.
Perhaps the largest task is garden maintenance. This year we cut down several trees blocking sun from one corner of the garden. We also had all the wild growth around the fence of the garden pushed back 20 feet.
The expanded irrigation system consists of over one thousand linear feet of dripline in the beds which needs to be arranged around each plant and we had 2,224 plants this year.
We currently have 45 raised beds. For the last two years we have been replacing rotted beds with new ones made of wood guaranteed not to rot for 20 years. We will continue to replace the old beds each year.
We had a few challenges with critters (large and small) who love what we grow. One species of small critter loved our tomatoes. A much larger critter jumped over the 6’ fence and enjoyed our string beans.
In spite of the work and challenges in growing a large garden, it has also been very rewarding. We have a lot to be thankful for. The garden is on land owned by the Federated Church that lets us use the land at no cost. The garden is located behind the Sturbridge Town Hall that provides us with water for the garden. We have many sponsors and donors who provide financial support. While many contractors do work for us without charging us, we still have expenses for materials. We would be remiss not to mention our great volunteers and we appreciate each one of them. Our hours this year are 10-11:30 AM every Tuesday and Thursday and 9-10:30 AM every Sunday.
While the garden is still producing this summer, we don’t have statistics yet for this year but in the 2023 season, produce grown and donated to the St. John Paul II Food Pantry in Southbridge served 737 Households with almost half that number being Seniors. We were also able to make 5 deliveries of fresh produce to Food Share in Southbridge. Total volunteer hours for 2023 in the garden were 740.
We welcome all comments and/suggestions sent to cfcgarden357@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CFCGardens. We also welcome all volunteers.

Running every weekend until October 27, the spooktacular Halloween event brings twelve nights of enchanting entertainment, thrilling new attractions and a lineup of distinguished performers.
Guests can expect a stunning array of live performances, featuring hand balancing, fire breathing, breathtaking aerial acrobatics, and Cyr wheel acts. New attractions this year include a labyrinth winding through the dark countryside, eerie carnival games, and haunting tales of historical tragedies.
In addition to the performances, attendees can engage with Halloween traditions through activities such as coffin-making demonstrations and reenactments of early American mourning rituals, including an authentic 1830s wake. Popular activities returning this year include "Clues and Candy" and spooky ghost stories around the bonfire, accompanied by a seasonal menu featuring themed food and drinks.
“‘Phantoms by Firelight’ is an unforgettable Halloween experience, allowing guests to explore the Village at their own pace by the flickering glow of firelight,” said Rhys Simmons, Director of Interpretation at Old Sturbridge Village. “We’ve crafted an immersive experience that weaves together mesmerizing performances and historical tales that bring the spirit of Halloween to life. We invite families and friends to join us this October for an experience like no other!”

“A mysterious troupe of gravity-defying performers returns to Old Sturbridge Village this October, setting up their mysterious, death-defying acts in the most unexpected of places as the sun goes down,” said P. J. Griffith, director of Cyrkus Vampyr.
The event will be open from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on event nights. Discounted tickets are available for members ($28 Adult / $14 Youth) and the public ($34 Adult / $16 Youth) until October 3. Saturday, 10/5, – Ed Hood, Walking Tour of Tantiusques – The Sturbridge Leadmine
10 AM; Tantiusques Reservation, 493 Leadmine Road
This tour will be led by Ed Hood, Executive Director of the Norcross Wildlife Foundation, and an historian and archaeologist who led the excavations at the nearby Robert Crowd site, home for one of the miners who worked at the leadmine. This mine was the source of very high-quality graphite which Native Americans used and traded across the region and which early European settlers first attempted to mine in the 1640s. The walking tour will discuss this history and look at some of the remains of mining done in the mid-1800s when the mine was at its peak of production. The tour will then follow the Trustees of Reservations hiking trail around the site and out to the Robert Crowd archaeological site where the lives of miners and other residents of the site will be discussed. The tour will last about 1 hour and cover about a mile of trail, some of which is rough and steep.
The tour will start at the information kiosk for the Tantiusques Reservation, 493 Leadmine Road, Sturbridge.
Registration preferred, please contact sgibquig@gmail.com.
