Welcome to this issue of our bi-weekly CSU Land-Grant e-News. We keep you in the know of happenings in the CSU 1890 Land-Grant Program, Extension, and Agricultural Research and Development (ARD). Each issue brings you new and engaging content. This is the first issue of the newsletter for 2024. Enjoy!


2023 in Pictures

Central State Research and Economic Development and Land-Grant showcase new research complex 

Central State University had the opportunity to present at the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) annual conference on Nov. 16, 2023. Above is a screenshot of some of the 11 CSU administrators (including Interim President Alex Johnson, Ph.D., top-middle), research professors, and Board of Trustees chair, who met via Zoom with nearly 50 agriculture industry representatives. The purpose of the special webinar titled “Investing in Central State University's Research Mission” was to share current CSU Land-Grant research, showcase the planned Research Complex, and offer opportunities for strategic research and financial partnerships.  Read more/watch the video about "HBCU Showcase Webinar: Investing in Central State University's Research Mission."

LAND-GRANT PODCASTS

Extension Central podcast resumed Aug. 11 with a focus on "Rural Grocery Stores," presented as part of Extension's community and economic development program addressing stakeholders' needs where they live. Listen on SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcast.

Research Connection Podcast focuses on research activities and projects that are occupying the attention of CSU research faculty and students. You can listen on SoundCloud or on wcsufm.org.

Six Questions for the Researchers: An Encore

CSU research professor, Marcus Nagle, Ph.D., (r), Ebony Murrell,Ph.D., of the Land Institute in Salina, Kan., and a team of researchers from both institutions completed planting silflower on a plot in Beavercreek Township in early September. They are testing integrating the perennial crop for increased production and honey yield. Read more. View a photo gallery.

CSUE PRESENTS USDA FARMERS DISCRIMINATION FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

James Keys, interim regional Extension associate/regional educator (Southern Region) holds "Families Eating Smart, Moving More" classes on most Wednesdays of the month, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Highland County YMCA in Hillsboro, Ohio.  Each session includes a food activity that features tasting, recipe demonstration, and hands-on preparation, modified for budget and facility. Every session also contains a goal-setting component for participants. "The program is designed to provide participants knowledge and skills through practical, simple solutions that empower them to make positive behavior changes to improve their own health and the health of their family," Keys says. Brandy E. Phipps, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and her focus on diversity, inclusivity, equity, and justice in her research and teaching are the subject of a web article on WYSO.org. Dr. Phipps was named a recipient of the 2023 National Award for Excellence in Agricultural Teaching in November, one of eight university professors across the country to be so honored.

WYSO is a public radio station licensed to Miami Valley Public Media in Yellow Springs, Ohio

Ibrahim Katampe, Ph.D., professor of chemistry and assistant director of Innovation and Technology Transfer, was quoted in a national story regarding measures to eliminate discrimination in disbursing climate-mitigation grants to farmers across the country by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The story was published on the National Public Radio website, with the title: "Can $3 billion persuade Black farmers to trust the USDA?" The story was also reported by the Food & Environment Reporting Network, underscoring its national significance.
