We need YOU to contribute your knowledge to the scientific sessions. We are looking for approximately 200 Scientific Presentations or Poster Presentations on diagnostic laboratory topics. Presentations from all of the disciplines are encouraged, including Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Bacteriology, Virology, Serology, Toxicology, Parasitology, Molecular Diagnostics, and Epidemiology.

The purpose of the AAVLD/NVSL Summer Diagnostic Symposium is directed at AHDL and NAHLN bench diagnostic scientists. The topic of this first diagnostic scientist symposium will be Molecular Diagnostics. It will include overview presentations by subject matter experts on the latest molecular diagnostic technologies, feedback on how to approach and troubleshoot inconsistent test results, the logistics of developing high throughput testing capabilities, the logistics of interlaboratory cooperation and spreading of the workload, and tabletop exercises. This first symposium may produce a model for subsequent annual symposia of the same type and purpose on various subjects.

WASHINGTON – Feb. 27, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announces a collaboration with the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) to bolster national animal health preparedness. This vital $1 million in funding supports rapid investigations of unexplained morbidity or mortality events, or UMEs, in animals – unexpected deaths or illnesses that could signal emerging threats. This proactive approach to surveillance strengthens APHIS' commitment to safeguarding animal health across the nation.
"The ability to rapidly diagnose unknown illnesses in animals is vital for preventing outbreaks and safeguarding public health,” said Mike Watson, APHIS Administrator. “This new cooperative agreement marks a significant leap forward in our ability to detect emerging threats at the earliest stages through advanced testing and collaboration with the National Animal Health Laboratory Network."

Coinfection by Mycobacterium marinum and Mycolicibacterium fortuitum in a captive adult diamondback water snake causing disseminated mycobacteriosis with acute cutaneous ulceration, Barrantes Murillo et al.
Abstract. An adult male captive diamondback water snake (Nerodia rhombifer) was found dead after a 1-d history of lethargy and cutaneous ulcers. The snake had eaten 2 sunfish (Mola spp.) 5 d before death. Gross examination revealed white-to-tan nodules in the lung and liver and segmental intestinal impactions with digested fish. Histopathology confirmed disseminated granulomas with numerous intrahistiocytic acid-fast bacteria in the skin, skeletal muscle, lung, liver, and intestines. Mycobacterium marinum and Mycolicibacterium fortuitum were identified by culture of the hepatic granuloma, followed by PCR and rpoB gene sequencing. To our knowledge, this is the first description of M. marinum and M. fortuitum coinfection in this species. More
