Data Science Education | Zachary del Rosario '14


Zachary del Rosario ’14, assistant professor of engineering at Olin, has published two new pieces on data science education and both reveal how blind use of the average has led to discrimination and injury. Zach's work can be found in The Conversation US and In the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education.

Principles of Integrated Engineering | Pi Day


Last week in honor of Pi Day (3.14) we highlighted the hallmark Olin course, Principles of Integrated Engineering (PIE), previously known as POE—Principles of Engineering.



While enrolled in this course, second-year students conceive, design, and implement a mechatronic system that includes mechanical design, electronics, and software—all with the real world constraints of materials, process, and budget. In keeping with the theme, students also enjoy delicious pie during their demo day events!

Jessi Murray '10 is the Chief Product Officer for the MA Department of Early Education and Care, where she has been building a new Product organization from the ground up. Throughout her software PM career, Jessi has been looking for ways to use her skills to make people's lives tangibly better, working on popular operating systems as well as niche tools for scientists. After over a decade in the private sector, she made the leap to the public sector, first working on the Massachusetts Paid Family & Medical Leave program before shifting to the Department of Early Education and Care in early 2023.

 

For Oliners looking for a mission-driven role, Jessi will explain why civic technology is a great place to land.

April Virtual Learning Lab | AI & Society, A Collective Inquiry  

 

Join Annie Zeng '15 every Wednesday in April – 3/10/17/24 7-8:30 ET 


Annie will conduct this 4-part series which will look at how algorithms and digital technology are impacting our world. How should AI be governed? Do you and I have a voice? Are we building the right skills to deal with all that these emerging technologies bring? This will be a mix of reading group and hands-on workshop. Join other alumni in examining what skills we have - or need - in our toolkit to make the right decisions in society, corporations and government today. 

 

Annie holds an MS in Cultures of Art, Science, and Technology from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. She is a researcher/practitioner based in Los Angeles.
