In Loving Memory of

Sr. Mary Angela DiCara, OSF

By Sr. Elaine Cote, OSF

How do you summarize the life of a woman well-lived for more than 93 years on this earth?

I suppose I should start at the beginning. Sr. Mary Angela’s obituary tells us she was born on Oct. 22, 1930, to a fairly large, loving, Italian family. Her childhood was a happy one. The obituary will also tell you the place of her birth, the schools she attended and graduated from, etc. Sr. Mary Angela was already a teacher when she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.

When Sr. Mary Angela was in college, she was studying to become a nurse. One day during her training, she went to the children’s section to read them a story. When she finished, a little child came up to her, gave her a big and said, “I LIKE YOU!” From that moment on, Sr. Mary Angela changed from nursing to teaching.

Sr. Mary Angela was a woman of her own convictions. She would never sacrifice her values to just agree with someone. She was also very competitive in a good sense of the word. She never stopped learning.

She loved her hobbies – playing cards – if possible 8 days out of 7. She was an avid reader, especially of Lillian Braun’s Cat Mystery stories and, of course, her Sudoku puzzles and Bingo!

Sr. Mary Angela kept connected to her family through their weekly phone calls. All of us feel we know the DiCara family from all of the photos Peggy and others sent. We all saw them at least once and sometimes twice.

To sum up Mary Angela’s life, she loved her God, her family, her religious community, friends and simply loved her life and all who were part of it.

“When through one woman, a little more love and goodness, a little more light and truth comes into the world, that woman’s life had meaning.” – Alfred Delph, S.J.

And you are that woman, Mary!

Catholic Sisters Week Food Drive

Our Catholic Sisters Week Food Drive to benefit the St. Bonaventure University Food Pantry was an overwhelming success!

In addition to a very heavy box of food, we raised more than $500 in cash.

Mike Waseda, Assistant Director of the university’s Franciscan Center for Social Concern, said they are thrilled and thankful for the generous donations.

He added that, this year, they have seen a greater need than in previous years but have also seen an increase in donations. The food pantry started in 2019 after it became obvious that food insecurity was an issue on college campuses.

BayCare Receives Award

BayCare has been awarded the 2024 Top Workplaces USA award by Energage and USA Today, ranking in the top 100 companies nationwide with 2,500 employees or more.

"Earning the Top Workplaces USA award is a reflection of our dedicated team's commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care in our community," said BayCare President and CEO Stephanie Conners. "This recognition underscores our ongoing efforts to ensure our team members feel valued and heard. It affirms our belief that when we listen to and invest in our team members, the entire community benefits.”

Fr. Pamfilo da Magliano

This year is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, Fr. Pamfilo da Magliano.

The St. Elizabeth Motherhouse and Congregational Office staffs are working together to put together a celebration for the entire congregation to mark the day.

We’ll be giving you details of the celebration soon but, in the meantime, save the date: April 22.

CARE in Brazil

Last week, many of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany met at the Admirable Mother Convent in Annapolis, Brazil, for the second module of the C.A.R.E. (Conversational Approach to Relational Effectiveness) training.

The program, which involves the entire congregation, seeks to empower and help us walk deeply; share with each other; and live authentically in community.

The advisors are psychologists Dr. Ted Dunn and Dr. Beth Lipsmeyer Dunn.

Storms in Bolivia

Strong thunderstorms with heavy hail hit La Paz, Bolivia, last week. Sisters Elvira and Maria are doing fine. They are asking for prayers for residents of La Paz affected by the storm and flooding.

Sister's Legacy Request

For Catholic Sisters Week, Sisters in St. Elizabeth Motherhouse and the surrounding area were asked what they hope their legacy would be.

Now, we would like to include all the Sisters in that project.

As an example of what we’re looking for, here’s what Sister Eleanor Berrett and Sister Gladys Sharkey said.

If you would like to be included in this project, which will be shared in this newsletter, please email anne.holliday@fsallegany.org. She can have them translated into Portuguese or Spanish so please don’t let that keep you from participating.

Happy Birthday!
