Stop and Smell the Flowers
1800 Wednesday, August 3

I am in a beautiful place. I try to remind myself to stop and smell the flowers, so to speak. Much of the time my mind gets preoccupied with the engine. As much as I have pressed today, I am getting no real updates or answers. So, take a deep breath and smell the flowers, look beyond at the yellow punt laying of the aging wooden pier in down in Ferryland to the south of me.

Today a few of the boats from the CCA/RNYC Cruise have arrived early for their few days of events here in Long Pond at the end of their cruise. I believe by tomorrow about eleven Cruising Club of America boats will be represented, along with a good contingent of Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club boats that have participated in the joint cruise.

I recall sailing up here back in 1987 for a past joint cruise of the two clubs. I was on my dad's boat back then. My parents returned to the states for a couple of weeks and I took their boat a bit further north and managed to get a photo of their boat, Enchanted, in front of an iceberg. It was a blustery day off shore. We put two of our crew in an inflatable in full foul weather gear and PFDs while the remaining two of us tacked back and forth in front of the berg with it blowing 25 knots plus. Enchanted's bow was dipping under in the seas. It was a wild ride in the inflatable; we did swing by and pick up the photo crew before they drifted too far astray. Every time I have been in these lands and waters I am impressed with the natural beauty. So, I stop and smell the flowers.
