Thursday, November 17, 2022 - Amazing Space
|
|
Dear Friends in Christ,
A couple weeks ago Lydia Gone held an 88th birthday party for her father, Benjamin Yesubhakth, in our Great Hall. It was a joyous affair, and I am proud that our newly renovated space (2018) could be a part of the celebration: the elevator allowed him to get into the space; the audio/video system enabled music, pictures and video; the big windows and tall ceilings offered a bright, airy place to gather.
Most of us do not have room in our homes for 30+ people. If you are looking for a space to gather, you might consider renting the Great Hall (with kitchen if needed), or the Good Shepherd Room. We sometimes rent the space to outside groups (non-profit only), and we are especially happy to rent to those with ties to the parish: your Girl Scout Troop, youth soccer team, family reunion...etc Our fees are lower for members, but they are still high enough to cover cleaning, building wear-and-tear, and the administrative time for the rental. If you are interested, reach out to Pam Eversfield.
Such a gathering was also a reminder of the enormous amount of time and energy that went into the renovations and the larger addition. We spent a year simply listening to one another before anyone even picked up a pencil to begin sketching the possibilities. It was agonizingly slow for many of us. But our patience paid dividends in both the final structure and the communal bonds forged in the process.
Peace and Blessing,
Seth+

Stewardship 2023:
Living Stones
Thank you for your faithful generosity!
Campaign Update!
We currently have 135 pledges collected. Our campaign goal is 190 pledges (last year we had 186).
Beginning this week, the Stewardship Team will call every household in the parish to express gratitude for pledging and to offer a very gentle nudge to those who find themselves a little behind.
If you would like a hard-copy pledge card, please feel free to reach out to the office. For those who prefer to fill out the pledge card electronically, simply go here.
Our last stewardship moment featured Dave Honecker speaking about what Christ Church has meant to him and Sandy. See it here
We are deeply grateful that you would prayerfully consider a pledge to the parish for 2023. Your generosity helps create a spiritual home where all are welcome.
2023 Stewardship Team - Beth Durant (Chair), Steve Bruemmer, Loni Hagerup, Joan King, Ben Rikkers, Julie Thauer, The Rev. Seth Dietrich

Stewardship FAQs
1. What is a pledge?
A pledge is a sacred commitment to give a certain portion of household income to the parish for the following calendar year. In many ways, it is a spiritual practice. On a practical level, it helps us form the parish budget for next year.
2. What do people typically give?
At Christ Church, pledges range from $150 to $23,500. Last year, 186 households pledged with an average pledge of $3,400. Everyone is in a very different financial position, and every pledge is deeply appreciated.
3. What is the concept of "tithing?"
Like many Christian traditions, the Episcopal Church encourages "the biblical standard of the tithe for financial stewardship" (Canon III 6.2.iii). Tithing 10% of income comes from the practice of the ancient Israelites bringing the first 10% of their harvest to the Temple. While some of us are there; many of us are still on the journey to get there.
4. Who knows about my pledge?
Pledging amounts are kept highly confidential. Only the financial administrator, Patrice Hansen, and Fr. Seth has access.
5. What if I have questions about parish finances?
We are more than happy to provide a copy of the parish budget as well as answer any questions. Contact the parish wardens, Ben Rikkers or Penny Cruse for more information.

Children can also earn a prize by getting their Gifts of Hope passport stamped by all the organizations.

Self-Improvement
Is pursuing self-improvement for its own sake a selfish, spiritual dead-end or the key to spiritual growth? The German philosopher Hegel noted that ‘intellectual enlightenment makes people shrewder, not better.’ What does it take to make people better?
No prep needed. Simple discussion questions can be found HERE. Simply Bring a beverage of your choice. Snacks provided. We will meet at church in the Good Shepherd room.

Thinking Bigger for Real Social Change
In-person and LIve-streamed from the Great Hall at 10:45am
|
|
NEXT UP: December 11, 2022
Susan Dreyfus
Retired CEO of Alliance for Strong Families
Achieving the breakthrough results we have long wanted to see in health and human services that serve our neighbors experiencing poverty, homelessness, mental health, child abuse and neglect and education challenges is within our reach if we can move from thinking programs and services are the only answer to what will drive true systems change thinking for generational results.
Christ Church parishioner, Susan Dreyfus has recently stepped into what she likes to call her “Second Act” after close to 30 years working and leading in both the public and nonprofit social sectors at the county, state, and national levels. Susan believes that by focusing on the root causes that impact a person’s health and wellbeing, education success, economic stability and safety we can find the answers to these perplexing issues in our nation. Susan will share what we are learning as a nation from the advancing neurosciences and how inequities and systemic racism are perpetuated by policies and failed narratives that programs alone simply cannot solve for. She will offer insights into how we as individuals and as a congregation can be a bigger part of moving systemic change in addition to our crucial outreach efforts at Christ Church

Families!
Our nursery is staffed and open for all children, birth through 3 years old starting on September 11, from 9:15-10:45AM.
Sunday School meets for grades Pre3/4k-5th grade from 9:15AM until returning to worship during the passing of the peace. Calendar, locations, and classes will be shared in more detail next week. If you would like to volunteer to teach, please see the article below and contact Aaron Shoppa.
A Note on Preschool 3 year olds: We recognize that children grow at different stages and not all children are at the same areas of development at a specific age. If you think your child is ready to join us in Sunday School, then please do so. If not, the nursery is always available for children, birth through 3 years old. Feel free to make the best choice for your child, and if that varies from week to week or even at the mid-year point, that is totally okay!
Sunday School meets again this week, starting in the classrooms at 9:15AM and going until about 10:05AM when children enter worship to rejoin their families. Have you signed up to help teach or assist? We have NO ONE signed up to help on October 30. If we cannot find willing volunteers, we will have to cancel Sunday School for that morning.
Holy Moly: Naomi and Ruth
Connect - The Promise: Jacob and Esau

Attention: Those who may be considering composting:
Look for a poster in the Great Hall telling you just what goes in. Compost Crusader (compostcrusader.com) picks up at your home if you don’t want to “grow” garden soil. Could be fun to try - New Year resolution?

New Options for heating your
water at home: There are new options for energy efficient ways to heat your water at home. The best time to research them is NOT when there is a puddle on your basement floor -crisis mode! The average life expectancy of water heaters is 10 years, so check yours and plan ahead. On your water heater there is a plaque near the bottom with the age and number of gallons. Check out the heat pump idea and decide if it makes sense for you!
