Your Monthly Message from Principal Herman...
Hello Eagle Families!

Have you bought your tickets for our fall play, Treasure Island, yet? With a student-created set, a lobby decorated by our AHS art club students, and a cast that have spent hours prepping, this is one to catch! (see picture at right for student-created set)

And, did you hear the news? District One Champions in Cross Country AND football! Can't wait to see what these teams take on next!

Please encourage your student to get engaged at Arlington High School outside of their classes. We have over 40 clubs in addition to our athletics for student involvement. Involvement helps our students connect to the AHS community--and we want to help every student find connections to what they are passionate about. Remember, we ask three things of your student every day: 1) work hard, 2) be kind, 3) get involved.

The end of first quarter is upon us and we are looking forward to seeing you at parent conferences on November 9th. We value your partnership as we look to grow students who think analytically, make connections, embrace rigor, and will be ready to pursue their passions. We know that school is important and that education matters...but is it hard to convince our kids of that sometimes? It sure can be! Research shows us that when parents of middle and high school students make the commitment to be involved in their student's education, the message can be stronger. According to one 10th grader, "In high school, you kinda want your parents to butt out of school. The less they know, the better. When they hang in there you may not like it, but you see how much they care. It like rubs off." When we both (parents/guardians and educators) help nurture life-long habits, it's no surprise that the success magnifies. Usually the top advice for parents is "monitor your child's homework." Sounds simple enough, but it's now. Getting homework “done” requires more than mastering math facts or punctuation. Our students need to organize their tasks, stick to them, and manage their time. They need to listen and ask questions when teachers assign the work. This is what we need your help partnering on so that we can help our students develop these skills. We also need help developing “character strengths” like grit, curiosity, conscientiousness, even optimism. Our students need to learn self-control and how to manage stress. We know they will have to learn from their failures. The more curious and resourceful our students are, the better. They need self-confidence—the belief that they can succeed in spite of obstacles. When we read works from scientists who study the brain and how we learn, we find further reinforcement that all of us can grow strong and meet challenges if we work hard and stick with it. Inborn talent and predispositions (like shyness) are just the starting point. Habits, like abilities, are also developed through practice. The latest research suggests that these social and emotional skills are as important as academic skills in laying the foundation for student success—and can be taught and learned. Success builds on success. Thank you for being our partners in this!

Our students have shown amazing strengths and skills academically, athletically, artistically, and in their character. We can't wait to help them continue forward on their journey!

Please continue to reach out to your AHS admin team and office staff if you need anything to support your student.

With Every Eagle at heart,

Marilee Herman

KEEPING YOU IN THE LOOP
Food Services: You may notice that the portal for making online payments to your student's food service account looks a little different this year. We're now using TouchBase for processing these payments, and if you already have a TouchBase login you're ready to sign in and make payments. If you don't have a login it will take just a few minutes to set it up. Please go to wa-arlington.intouchreceipting.com and follow the instructions to create your password (your username is the same one you use for Skyward Family Access). Automatic payments that were set up in the old system will not carry forward. Online payments are not posted to food service accounts in real time, but they are updated several times throughout the day and should be reflected in the account balance no later than 7:30 am the following day.

REMINDERS
From the health room:
With the changing of seasons comes more visits to the health room. Make sure that if your child requires medication for pain (especially menstrual cramps) or allergies/colds/etc. that you have turned in a med authorization form to the health room alongside the meds they would like to keep at school. We do NOT have meds to pass out to students without a provider’s orders.

The health room does not send kids home unless they have one of the listed symptoms on the “Too Sick for School” info sheet. If your student calls to go home and you have questions, feel free to speak with one of us. We can clarify whether they are required to go home vs. wanting to go home.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, we are thankful for our students, staff, and families!

With gratitude,
Nurses Artika Ram, LPN & Krista Gibson, RN, BSN

A team within the district put together a Health Services Resource Guide that puts local health resources in one place to support social, emotional, and overall health. This guide is geared toward staff, families, and students at the secondary level.

Character Strong - It Takes All of US!
Let's talk quarter academic progress... The Family Character Dare of the Month is...
...how is that first quarter going?

For our teens, our Weekly Character Dare is generally posted in the Commons, but we also share it on social media via @AHSFlyEaglesFly (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) where we have over 6,000 subscribers who can view these dares daily. By working on these dares together and talking about them, we grow closer and more connected. The kids get this opportunity together in Friday's Every Eagle Advisory. The Staff have Weekly Dares too! The more WE do as adults, the more THEY do as kids. Family Dares simply tie it all together... here's Character Strong's C.A.R.E approach! It's a fun, simple approach to building Every Eagle's Commitment, Patience, Humility, Selflessness, Kindness, Respect, Honesty and Forgiveness - traits that lead to success beyond AHS. Enjoy your monthly Family Dares!
