Iowa House Sends Bill Making Illegal Immigration a State Crime to Governor

Senate File 2340 was approved on a vote of 64-30. The bill would make entry or being found in Iowa an aggravated misdemeanor for people denied admission, deported, or otherwise removed from the US if they had an order to leave the country. The legislation also proposes allowing state courts to order the deportation of undocumented immigrants in the state and allowing law enforcement and state agencies to transport migrants to a port of entry to ensure they leave the country.


Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom Talks Settlement on City’s Right-to-Shelter Policy

New York City settled last week on altering its right-to-shelter policy. Under the deal, any newly arrived migrants over 23 would receive only 30 days of shelter, after which they would not have an opportunity to reapply, barring “extenuating” circumstances. Pressed on the homelessness the new policy would create, the deputy mayor pushed back on the projected outcome.


US Border Patrol Chief Calls Southern Border a "National Security Threat," Citing 140,000 Migrants Who Evaded Capture

In an interview, US Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens called the situation at the southern border a "national security threat." He expressed concern about tens of thousands of migrants who have evaded apprehension and entered the country surreptitiously over the past five months. Owens said that the border patrol is "closing in" on recording one million apprehensions of migrants between ports of entry along the US-Mexico border in the 2024 fiscal year, which started in October.
