Update

Happy October Family & Consumer Sciences Educators and Supporters,

The leaves are beginning to turn to bright yellow, orange, and a million shades of red here in Iowa. The farmers are out in their fields harvesting the corn and soybeans. The mornings are crisp and the afternoons pleasant. Tailgating and cheering on our favorite sports teams whether in youth sports, high school, college or the pros takes up a good portion of our weekends, and our schools are once again packed with students wanting to learn, socialize and prepare for that next big step in their lives.

As educators, our school year ebbs and flows like the mountain streams as the seasons change. You may find yourself in the “Teaching Groove” right now or maybe even feel a little overwhelmed with a new class you’re teaching. Whatever that place is for you right now, I hope that you have support from your colleagues, friends and family.

As a member of ACTE, you can always count on an organization that supports you and your CTE programming by providing a rich array of professional development resources, events and networking opportunities. Whether you are a new or experienced CTE professional, this is your community and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Education is YOUR division!

I’d like to ask each of you for your help. During the ACTE CareerTech VISION, the FCS Division recognizes and honors charismatic educators who have served and supported the organization in outstanding ways.

  • The OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS AWARD recognizes a member of the Family and Consumer Sciences Division and their contributions to Family and Consumer Sciences and the FCS division of ACTE will be emphasized.
  • The second FCS Division award is the CITATION AWARD. Recipients of this award must be individuals or groups outside Family and Consumer Sciences Education, such as a Representative or Senator, business and industry rep or groups, journalists, or other professionals who have made significant contributions to Family and Consumer Sciences Education beyond local levels in areas like service, Monetary Support, or other unusual or unique contributions.

Nominations are due by Oct. 30. Contact Kristin Vest if you have questions about the FCS Division Awards at kvest2@lps.org.

NATFACS is also conducting a search for excellence in CTE to highlight outstanding educators as part of the awards program. Awards are in a variety of categories such as Champion of FCS, Award of Merit, Distinguished Service, New Professional, and Pride Award. All award applications are available on the ACTE Awards portal and are due by Oct. 15.

Please consider nominating someone or multiple individuals for one of these awards!

Have you been looking for some spare change to help you pay for your undergraduate or graduate degree? Stop digging in the couch cushions or in your car because we’ve got you covered! The FCS Division awards fellowships to graduate students who are members of ACTE that are pursuing an advanced degree in FCS education. The application can be completed via a Google Form. NATFACS will award two undergraduate scholarships to full-time students who are majoring in a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education certification program. The applicant must have completed the freshman year of college. The awards application can be found on the ACTE Awards Portal.

Each year, the FCS Division celebrates Family and Consumer Sciences educators through the Roll of Honor. In 1960, the FCS Division began Roll of Honor to create a fellowship fund which would provide fellowships to graduate students who would become the future leaders in the profession, and honor outstanding family and consumer sciences professionals. Please take a moment to check out more information about how you or your state can add an FCS professional’s name to the Roll of Honor and support the graduate fellowship fund. Please contact Dr. Dawn Mallette at dawn.mallette@colostate.edu for more information or to submit a name to the FCS Roll of Honor.

Thank you for what you do everyday for students, teachers and supporters of FCS. I hope to see you at the CareerTech VISION 2022 Conference!

Thank you,

Katy Blatnick-Gagne, Ed.D.

FCS Division VP
