Dear Hafoc,

On behalf of the NoHLA Board of Directors, I am sharing bittersweet news of an organizational transition. After having founded and led the organization for 25 years, Janet Varon is retiring at the end of this year and NoHLA will be moving forward with new and exciting leadership plans.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Janet for her exceptional leadership. Her dedication, passion and expertise have been the driving force behind NoHLA’s success.

Under Janet’s leadership, the organization has been a catalyst for change. Here are just a handful of accomplishments that we’re most proud of:

  • NoHLA has been a driving force toward expanding eligibility for health coverage through Medicaid and state-funded health programs to ensure equitable access to care for all Washingtonians.
  • We’ve pushed for improvements in the health services Washington residents can get through their health insurance, worked toward removing insurance barriers to getting necessary care, opposed cuts in coverage, and simplified access to public programs.
  • NoHLA is shining a light on problems consumers experience in our health care system, like the continually rising prices that impair access and cause medical debt for so many.

With Janet's upcoming retirement at the end of 2024, we are embarking on an exciting new chapter for NoHLA. Our Board of Directors, with the help of an executive search firm, is commencing a search for a new co-executive to join Deputy Director Emily Brice in jointly leading NoHLA into the future. We are seeking candidates who embody our values, possess strong management and leadership qualities, and have a deep commitment to social justice and health equity. The search process will be thorough and inclusive, and we are committed to finding the best possible candidate to partner with Emily in leading NoHLA forward. We will share more information soon.

Your support is invaluable as we navigate this transition period and envision NoHLA’s future.

We will be celebrating NoHLA’s achievements and Janet's incredible leadership at a special 25th Anniversary event. Please save the date for Thursday, September 26 - more details to follow.

A Note From Janet

It’s been an honor and my passion to build our organization to help people get the health care they need. We have accomplished a great deal over the last 25 years, with many twists, turns, and difficult setbacks, but there is much more to do to achieve a just health care system.

I'm so glad our board and staff is committed to moving NoHLA forward after I retire. NoHLA is a critical player in helping to represent the consumer voice in health care policy in Washington.

We are so grateful for your partnership and hope you will stand with us through this transition and beyond!

Janet
