All students are welcome to attend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 at Stauffer-Flint Hall to learn more about internships, part-time positions and full-time positions. Student can get free portraits for their LinkedIn profiles taken by professional photographer Nick Krug from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery. Professor Yvonnes Chen was a featured speaker in the second Brown Bag for the Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research and Treatment on Oct. 7. Her talk titled “An Overview of Health-promoting Media literacy and its Application in Addiction Research,” provided a deep dive into six media literacy theoretical frameworks and in-depth case studies of her collaborative grant projects on sugary drinks reduction and vaping prevention. 


A study by Assistant Professor Ever Figueroa analyzing news coverage from Hurricane Harvey in 2017 showed continued patterns of presenting people of color as victims and white people as rescuers. The study concluded that coverage may not be conscious or ill-intentioned but reflects patterns in journalism and cultural values. Read the KU News story.


Aric Toler of Bellingcat, a Europe-based investigative outlet, came to KU to guest lecture in Lisa McLendon’s JMC 201 class on Monday, Oct. 3. Before class, he was interviewed by Kristen Howell for the Media Crossroads program “Accent.” Later that afternoon, he led a hands-on training session in open-source investigation for J-School students and faculty. 


The Bremner Editing Center and the KU Office of Research are partnering to offer a National Science Foundation CAREER Writing Workshop to help researchers build collaborations, improve grant writing skills and optimize their chances of securing grants. The workshop will provide strategies and tips for writing competitive CAREER proposals from CAREER Award winners and former NSF program officers, highlight potential educational-plan partners at KU, and explore the use of advanced writing techniques and partner review for enhancing proposal clarity and persuasiveness. News Engagement Day in Eudora


J-School students and faculty from the Eudora Times celebrated News Engagement Day last week by giving out free muffins and coffee in Eudora. The Eudora Times is a city paper run by faculty and students for three years. News Engagement Day an annual event created to encourage engagement with news and promote understanding about the principles and processes of journalism in a democratic society.

The KU Public Relations Student Society of America will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. A guest speaker will discuss why Nike is so successful and look at a few PR fails.


The KU Ad Club will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 303. Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, will discuss career fair and resume tips. This meeting will be held the day before the career fair and will provide useful information and advice to prepare students for the fair. This will be the last free meeting. Dues of $25 will be collected Oct. 19 through Nov. 16.


The University of Kansas Integrated Marketing Communications research class is seeking participants for a survey related to charitable giving and how nonprofit organizations increase donor retention. No participant information will be sold or disclosed to third parties. Data will be used strictly for research purposes. Access the survey here.


The Lewis Scholarship is a new scholarship program that will provide free housing and a monthly stipend to support student journalists of color who plan to intern at news media outlets in Washington, D.C., beginning in 2023. The Lewis Scholarship has an estimated value of $10,000 and will be awarded to one undergraduate student journalist of color each fall, spring and summer semester. The scholarship will provide a stipend of $1,000 a month and free housing provided through Washington Intern Student Housing for the duration of the student’s internship, usually four months. The University Career Center is hosting Mocktober Fest during October. Eighty-seven KU alumni have volunteered to conduct mock interviews with KU students Oct. 18 (4:30-5:30 p.m.) and Oct. 24 (5:30-6:30 p.m.). The interview is designed to help students increase their confidence, build their network and provide helpful feedback and techniques. This is a fun, relaxed and engaging opportunity for beginner and experienced interviewers. Interviews take place via Zoom and consist of one KU alumnus and two KU students, which allows for peer-to-peer and alumni feedback. For more information, contact the University Career Center at ucc@ku.edu or call 864-3624.

News-Press NOW to conduct interviews at Stauffer-Flint

Four representatives from News-Press NOW in St. Joseph, Missouri, will be on campus Oct. 26 conducting interviews between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for multimedia journalists and news producers.
