Medill receives $25,000 gift from SNPA Foundation to help fund The State of Local News Project

The SNPA Foundation has announced a $25,000 gift to the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University to help fund The State of the Local News Project.

Tim Franklin, senior associate dean and director of the Local News Initiative, said, “We are grateful for the support of the SNPA Foundation. While the Knight Foundation has pledged support for the bulk of the project, that commitment is contingent on the Medill School raising funds for a significant chunk of the work. We have also received support from the Microsoft Journalism Initiative and individual donors. The gift from the SNPA Foundation provides important industry validation of our program to key donors and helps us provide the funds to begin our important work.”

Generational change at Democrat-Gazette

Eliza Hussman Gaines turned her pale blue eyes toward her father in the WEHCO Media boardroom in Little Rock when the question arose: Will she be succeeding him as publisher of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette?

Walter Hussman Jr., chief of the paper since he and Walter Sr. bought it in 1974, is stepping down in the wake of turning 75. He’ll remain as chairman of WEHCO, which has 10 dailies in several states.

“There will be an announcement by the end of the year,” Hussman said, but neither he nor his daughter shot down the idea. Gaines, a University of North Carolina graduate like her dad, became the paper’s executive editor this year and was managing editor before that.

Over the past six months, our team at Signal Cleveland has built the foundation for a new type of community-first news organization. We’ve grown our team, listened to community members, and named and branded Signal Cleveland to reflect what we’ve heard.

Today we officially launch the website for Signal Cleveland which has information relevant to all Greater Clevelanders.

As you’ll see in our first stories published today, we’re committed to reporting on a variety of topics from the resident-first perspective and to holding our local leaders accountable. Along the way, we want to celebrate what makes Cleveland unique, vibrant and resilient.

Preserve public notices in newspapers

In an article written in Harpers Weekly in 1913, Justice Louis Brandeis made the statement, “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants.” And nothing shines a brighter light on government than newspapers.

There are some who would rather keep people in the dark, however, so newspapers must fight to be like the lamplighters of old.

There have been multiple efforts to take public notices out of newspapers and allow them to be placed on government websites. But according to Microsoft, about 32% or 2.4 million Arizona residents have no internet connection at home or elsewhere. Even if they did, it is unlikely they will search those sites on the off chance they will find a notice that affects them.

It is far more probable that readers will come across pertinent notices in their newspaper, either in print or online, especially since many newspaper editors comb public notices for story leads, such as a notice about a bar that intends to open near a pre-school, a rezoning request to place a cemetery across the street from a residential area, a mining company seeking a permit to withdraw millions of gallons of water from the local aquifer, a unique new business coming to town, etc.
