St. Nicholas’ Mission is to actively share Christ’s love for all people.

Our vision is to strive to be a welcoming community who worships a caring and merciful God, proclaims the Gospel, and promotes justice, peace, and love.

Hurricane Helene Updates:

The church office is closed Thursday, September 26. Erin is checking the church email and picking up voice mails from home.

FOCUS will open as a Storm Recovery Center for Harris County at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. (They will not be serving as an Emergency Shelter Thursday or Friday.) They will have blankets, flashlights, coffee, water, and snacks; and may possibly be serving a hot meal. You can go there for help after the storm - and if you have items to donate to this effort, or time to volunteer, go to 80 Palmetto Creek Drive (The Philomena Family Center off Hwy. 27) Saturday morning.

At this time, we are not anticipating any change to our plans on Sunday, but watch your email and the St. Nicholas Facebook page for any news.

Prayers for our first responders, utility workers, and all in harm's way over the next few days. Stay safe and check on each other!

Plan to join us and give a warm St. Nicholas welcome to our guests!

No First Sunday Brunch in October or November

Mark your calendars for brunch on December 1, though! And think about which brunch you'll host in 2025.

Book Club News: Wendell Berry for October

Only one of us has reported that they loved Nicked. Two of us grew to appreciate it and all the rest present at the September meeting hated it. An adventurous quest for St Nick’s bones did not save the story for most of us.

For October we have chosen an author closer to home — Wendell Berry, 90-year-old Kentucky author of 90 novels, stories, essays and poems. This time you may choose the Berry work you wish or read his acclaimed novel Hannah Coulter.

Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs. Darcy loves this book and offers this review:

“In this atmospheric novel, an older Hannah looks back on her life and reflects on what she has lost, and those she has loved. I adore Berry, who writes gorgeous, thoughtful, piercing novels, and this is one of his finest. Contemplative, wistful, and moving.”

The next meeting is Wednesday, October 2 following Evening Prayer at 5 pm.

St. Nicholas to Host Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 6 at 5:00 p.m., there will be a Blessing of the Animals here on the grounds at St. Nicholas.

The service will include prayers, hymns, and readings that celebrate our unbounded love for God’s creatures. It will be held outside, weather permitting, but will move under the porch in the case of rain.

Attendees are encouraged to bring pets, or mementos of previous pets, to be blessed. Young children may bring their favorite stuffed animal.

For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, dogs must be leashed and all animals must be in the owners’ control at all times. Clean-up stations will be available. St. Nicholas will provide refreshments for everyone - humans included!

The Blessing of the Animals is traditionally associated with St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is October 4. Of all the saints, Francis is particularly remembered for his love of animals and nature.

Hope to see you there!

Flower Guild Celebrates the Glory of God's Creation

Each week at St. Nicholas, you'll see flowers or greenery on the altar, to draw our eye to the heart of our worship space and to bring the beauty of Creation into our services. Every arrangement is the work of the Flower Guild, who take turns creating the small natural wonders that grace our church. (While some donate the cost of the flowers, it is not required and reimbursement is available.)

If you're interested in being a part of this beautiful ministry, contact Margaret Zachry (shown here with the flowers from the September 22 service) or the church office.

Stand by: We are experiencing Technical Difficulties

You may have received an opt-in form (or two) to receive communications from the church via text. This form appears to be working for some people but not for others. Constant Contact customer service as yet has no explanation for the problem - high hopes that it gets resolved soon.

In the meantime, if you were able to opt in, please respond to the follow-up text to complete the process. If you want to receive texts but the form didn't work for you, send your text-capable cell number to Erin in the office for manual upload.

In Our Church Family

Welcome a new member of our St. Nicholas family!

Michelle Moody's son and daughter-in-law (Sean and Kelsey) welcomed their son, James Mason Moody, to the world last week. This is Lynn Hall's great-grandson.

Prayers for blessings and congratulations to the family!

Passing of Gene Demonet

Gene Demonet passed away on Saturday, September 14. His family is making arrangements for a Celebration of Life here at St. Nicholas in October – more information to come as details are finalized. In the meantime, the family is in the online directory if you would like to send a card.

Your prayers are asked for:

Jen Reeder, Chris and Andy Butzon, the family of Janet Hume, and the family of Gene Demonet. Continued prayers are asked for Pat Demonet.

Continued prayers for all those in need within our community and those in the world who have suffered due to war and natural disaster. We pray for peace for the people of Israel and the Palestinians.

Please send all prayer requests to pastoralcare@stnicholashamilton.org.
