Love Notes- Longtermer Happy Tails!
| |
It’s a little grey and chilly out – in other words, the perfect time for some heartwarming Happy Tails! Nothing melts our hearts faster than finding loving homes for the animals in our care – including those who have been waiting so patiently for families of their own to love. So, this Valentine’s Day, we’ve compiled a few “love notes” in honor of some recent adoptions!

Strawberry Shortcake
“The best news of the week is that Strawberry Shortcake, after being in our care for over 200 days, was adopted by a wonderful woman that completely understands her. We are so happy for our beautiful red headed girl.”
- Karrie Stewart, RVT, HSSC Senior Manager Santa Rosa Adoptions and Healdsburg Campus

Sandra the Ice Queen
“After over 150 days in care, Sandra the Ice Queen has been adopted! Thank you to our adoptions team for working with her new family who wanted a smart, independent cat and are totally okay with her taking a good long while to warm up with them.”
– Saffron, HSSC Feline Behavior Program Manager

Yzma
“Yzma was given lots of love at the shelter in many different ways- from stellar veterinary care, to tons of enrichment, to lots of pets and one-on-one play time! As an FeLV cat, we knew it would take Yzma longer than average to get adopted (in her case, 125 days!) Luckily, Valentine’s Day came early when a person looking for a special cat fell in love with her and swept her off her paws! In her new home she will be known as ‘Mia’ and is going to be loved and spoiled in all the best ways possible!”
– Saffron, HSSC Feline Behavior Program Manager

Smushie
“Smushie came to HSSC in January 2023. He came bounding in with love and excitement and stole the hearts of all the staff and volunteers. Though he had a handful of interested people, none were quite the right fit for this perfect being. We couldn’t understand why such a spectacular dog would be here for so long. Obviously, it had to be because the right family needed some more time.
Then came along Andrea and family. They recently lost their 19-year-old dog and were looking for a senior dog to give a wonderful home to and there was Smushie. They are going to give him the life he absolutely deserves, filled with love, snuggles, and treats. After 384 days in the shelter, Smushie finally found his forever home! Happy tails Smushie, we couldn't be happier for you!
-Jazmine Johnson, HSSC ACT/Adoptions/Volunteer Coordinator, Healdsburg Campus

Porkchop
Porkchop found love after 145 days at the shelter! “Thank you for introducing us to the greatest creature on the planet. We love him so much and from going thru his records, it warms our hearts to see how well he’s been taken care of. We know he’s had a rough life, but rest assured, he’s living in luxury now. Will try to stop by soon!”
– Rachel, Porkchop’s new mom

Dear Cupid,
As Valentine's Day breaks, I find myself extending a humble plea to you. For over 200 days, I've patiently waited for love to find its way into my paws. So, I've decided to bring out the big guns – or should I say the little Cherub? I reckon it's about time to call upon the assistance of a baby with a bow and arrow. After all, if that's what it takes for love's arrow to find its mark on me, then so be it!
I am a 1-year-old Patterdale terrier mix, with captivating green eyes and and a coat that's a swirl of caramel goodness. My name pays tribute to the goddesses of love and beauty, as well as the brightest planet in our solar system, for I am certain to brighten your darkest days and fill them with warmth and love.
In my pursuit of companionship, I'm not chasing after grand gestures, but rather the simple pleasures of a serene home. A place brimming with gentle words, cozy nap spots, delectable treats, and a faithful friend by my side.
So, my dear Cupid, won't you please send a little extra love my way this Valentine's Day? With paws crossed, boundless hope, and tail wagging in anticipation, I will patiently await to embrace my forever valentine.
-Venus

Celebrating 5 years of compassionate care for beloved family pets! | |
As we continue to expand our safety net initiatives, our Community Veterinary Clinic remains one of our most deeply rooted endeavors, dedicated to keeping pets and their people together. We first established our CVC in 2019 and have been providing compassionate, sliding-scale vet care for low- to no-income pet guardians ever since. Not only is our CVC a vital resource for our community, it serves as a model for other shelters working to increase access to veterinary care in their own communities.
Last year, our hardworking CVC team logged 2,447 appointments. Demand for services shows no sign of letting up. Your support enables us to respond to our community’s outpouring of need and helps us keep pets out of the shelter and in the arms of the people who love them. We appreciate your support and the impact you are helping us make!
Don’t just take our word for it, here are a few “love notes” that our CVC has received from grateful clients:
“This place saved my kitty's life. Thanks to this vet, my kitty is healthy and happy again. I am beyond grateful. Thank you staff so much!”
“Very kind and caring. Really took the time to explain and care about my dog. The staff is the BEST. Thank you to you all.”
“I took my cat in to get a tumor removed. The staff are friendly and they listened to my concerns. At no time were they trying to force me to have surgery for my cat. It was quite the opposite. I was given positive options for surgery and for non-surgery. All around a very stress-free and positive experience for me and my cat.”
“Above and beyond. In addition to being affordable, they are gracious, patient, sympathetic and respectful. Before, I thought the care would be limited or sub-par given the affordability. Now, I can't imagine ever having to go through such a difficult time and have to make heart-wrenching decisions like those we just had to make, without them all... They are the best!”
“I'm so grateful. The best experience I've had with a veterinary office of any kind. The staff is amazing. Incredibly friendly.”

3-month old Sofia was transferred into our care from our partners at San Francisco Animal Care and Control. She was found as an injured stray in a high-traffic area of the city. During her exam, our medical team noted she didn’t want to bear weight on one of her hind legs. X-rays revealed a fractured femur and rib. They monitored her activity and administered pain medication to help keep her comfortable. As affectionate and full of purrs as Sofia was, our veterinarian knew that her damaged leg required amputation in order for the sweet young cat to have a happy, pain-free life.
We are pleased to report that Sofia’s surgery went well and she recovered like a pro! Best of all? This beautiful girl was adopted into her forever home after just 15 days in our care!
