The 14th Annual UlsterCorps Service Summit will be held Wednesday April 17th, 2024 from 8:30am – 12:30pm at SUNY New Paltz and is co-sponsored by the Center for Student Engagement, the Benjamin Center for Public Policy at SUNY New Paltz, and Ulster Savings Bank.

Each year since our founding in 2009, UlsterCorps has hosted a Service Summit at SUNY New Paltz bringing together students, volunteers and community leaders from the nonprofit, business, higher education and governmental sectors to address the work and value of volunteerism and collaborative projects in Ulster County.

The focus for the 2024 Summit will be environmental issues and sustainability, specifically ways that young people can and are making a difference. It will feature panel discussions of successful case studies, new models, and best practices. Members of the community interested in volunteering with these initiatives are welcome to attend.

Speakers/Roundtable Discussion Moderators include:

  • Lizabeth Cain, Ed.D., SUNY New Paltz, Repair Cafes
  • Manna Jo Greene, Ulster County Legislator, District 19

The Kiwanis Club of Kingston is proud to welcome you back to the 40th, yes, the 40th Annual Kiwanis Kingston Classic. Once again in 2024, Kiwanis will host the Kingston Classic, keeping the run in the historic waterfront district of the Rondout area of Kingston. Additionally, we will continue to use the Hutton Brickyard trail as part of the racecourse. This provided for more safety for the runners, a trail that was easy on your legs, and a scenic family fun run day. (Please see a description and map of courses on race info page). Again for 2024 there will be a 10K, 5K and a 1.5 mile, walk/run. Join fellow runners for fun, camaraderie, a great course, and a great post-race party which will be held at Ole Savannah on the creek complete with food, beer, ice cream and music.

The run is Sunday April 28, 2024, with the 10K and 5k starting at 10:00 am and the 1.5 mile run/walk starting at 10:15 am. A Post-race party and awards ceremony will immediately follow the race.

Upcoming Repair Cafes

Gardiner Repair Cafe

Sunday, April 28, 2024, 1-4pm

Gardiner Library

133 Farmer's Turnpike, Gardiner

The next Gardiner Repair Cafe will be on Sunday, April 28th from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the Gardiner Library located at 133 Farmer's Turnpike in Gardiner.

For more information or to volunteer please contact repaircafegardiner@gmail.com.

A Repair Cafe is a free community event. You bring your broken but beloved items and together with volunteer repair coaches, WE FIX THEM! People bring all kinds of things to a repair cafe: clocks and other mechanical items; chairs, frames, and other wooden items; electrical items and small appliances; digital devices; clothing and textiles; dolls, stuffed animals, and toys, tools in need of sharpening; jewelry and watches; and so much more! Most items get fixed, and even when they don’t – we have a good time trying!

We are looking for “Repair Coaches” to guide people in fixing all kinds of things. Repair coaches bring their own tools and supplies and offer repairs at no cost. If you would like to volunteer, the commitment can be on a per-event basis.

Rock The Ridge

Volunteer Opportunities

Rock The Ridge, a 50-mile endurance challenge and environmental fundraiser set in the natural beauty of Mohonk Preserve on May 4, could not be a success without a strong corps of volunteers. Whether it is supporting runners at an aid station, assisting with participant check-in, cheering on participants at the finish line, or any of the many other important roles, we have fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities for you or your organization!

We’ll provide training, an event t-shirt, food, and other amenities to all who volunteer their services to Rock The Ridge. We’ll also provide a volunteer certification document to any volunteers who need one for community service projects. Youth between the ages of 13 – 18 years old are eligible to volunteer if accompanied by adult chaperones.

Volunteering at the LGBTQ+ Community Center

Volunteers have long played a key role in LGBTQ+ community centers around the country. Our community center is no different. Almost twenty years ago, it was a small, determined group of volunteers tha founded the organization. That people power has been part of the Community Center since. While we took a pause in recent months as we reorganized, it is time to throw open the doors, and with spring around the corner, the timing could not be better.

Right now, there are two opportunities. The first, staffing our front desk and welcoming guests, is essential for us to expand the hours we’re open to the public. The second, “Giving the Building Some Love,” is an opportunity to participate in tending to the curb appeal of 300 Wall Street in conjunction with Kingston Clean Sweep on Saturday, May 4th.

If you’d like to volunteer for the front desk, please email richard@lgbtqcenter.org. If you’re interested in joining us for “Giving the Building Some Love,” please email Michael Erp, our Building Manager, at michael@lgbtqcenter.org. Stay tuned for more details about May 4th and other opportunities to volunteer at the Community Center, which will be on our website in the coming weeks.

A Home Within, Ulster County

A Home Within is a national nonprofit founded to provide free psychotherapy “for as long as it takes” for any child or adult who has spent time in foster care or kinship care. Continuity in psychotherapy is important for all children and adolescents. This is especially true for children who have had disruptions in care by their family. A Home Within therapists commit to working with their child pro bono once weekly until the child no longer needs them.

AHW therapists work closely with the Ulster County Department of Social Services (DSS). Most of our clients are children or adolescents who are in kinship care or foster care. Therapists must have completed a post-graduate training in psychotherapy and be certified, licensed, or working under supervision. To support their work every therapist participates weekly in a supervision group that meets mostly on zoom. Our therapists find the experience of working with AHW clients and the supervision groups to be a rich and rewarding experience.

Volunteering with A Home Within “gave more than it took…It helped me, hands on, to be a better therapist.” Tim Rodier, AHW Volunteer Therapist and Consultation Group Leader.

In the video below Dennis McCarthy, a consultant to AHW and founder of the Metamorfos Institute, and Julie Rose and Nina Tantillo, therapist volunteers for AHW for over 10 years, share their experiences.

Rosendale Heart and Soul

Have you ever wished you could harness the collective wisdom of our community and help make our best ideas a reality?

Rosendale Heart & Soul is a group of regular folks who care deeply about our town. Our mission is simple: we want to empower the full diversity of Rosendalians to contribute their ideas about the future of Rosendale. We accomplish this by listening to people, asking what they value most, and recording their ideas and desires. Whether meeting up with folks at our fun story-gathering parties, around-town community events, or on virtual chats, you’ll be helping everyone’s voice to be heard. We supply the training and support to make sure you are comfortable. This is a great opportunity for the curious to get to know our community in a deeper way- and people love to tell their stories!

HomeShare Woodstock

is expanding!

HomeShare Woodstock connects home providers and home seekers to help people remain in their communities, strengthen bonds between neighbors, and create mutually beneficial, affordable housing solutions.

HomeShare Woodstock is an innovative program matching homeowners who have extra living space with home seekers looking for safe and affordable rental situations. Ours is the first home sharing program in the state outside of New York City and the concept is new for people in our area. We serve towns within a 10 mile radius of Woodstock and currently have six Matches benefitting sixteen people!

"I am delighted to have welcomed my new housemate into my home, as his contributions extend beyond mere assistance; he has become a genuine pleasure to be around. The Homeshare program has not only facilitated a mutually beneficial living arrangement but has also enriched my life with a compatible and amiable companion. Kudos to Family of Woodstock for orchestrating such a well-organized and supportive program.”          Home Provider, Wittenberg

We need Volunteers!
