Five Things to Know About Donna Mayfield

By Donna Mayfield, Assessment Coordinator

I am originally from Raleigh and settled in the Triad after a short detour to Texas after college. I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with bachelor's degrees in elementary education and psychology. I joined the Transition Center team at DDCC in 2016 as a developmental reading and math instructor. It did not take long for me to realize what a valuable resource we offer to students at DDCC who are beginning or continuing their educational journeys. I currently serve as assessment coordinator for the NROC placement assessment, as well as a TA in the Transition Center. It has been a privilege to meet and encourage students who are eagerly, and sometimes hesitantly, coming to college to fulfill their life goals.

I currently live in Archdale with my husband, Andy. We have twin sons who are recent graduates of NCSU and Campbell, and a daughter who is a student at the University of TN. After years of supporting the interests of my kids, I am finding more time to pursue some new hobbies, such as a sign language class and a quilting project. I also enjoy cooking, gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Five Things to Know

  1. Travel: Our family took an amazing trip last year to tour some national parks in the western US. We hiked in Sedona, AZ, the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park (Utah), Yosemite, and Sequoia/King's Canyon National Park (CA). The views were breathtaking and reminders of the beauty that this country has to offer.
  2. Music & Podcast: I enjoy a variety of music, but I especially enjoy contemporary Christian artists. I have been encouraged by The Next Right Thing podcast by Emily P. Freeman who offers insightful reflections on the process of decision making.
  3. Food: I love to try new foods, but my favorites include Italian, seafood, French pastries, and summer veggies fresh from the garden!
  4. TV: Watching college sports is what I enjoy most on TV, especially Tarheel basketball. Go Heels!
  5. Joyful experience: Without a doubt, my greatest joys have been my marriage and the gift of being a mom to my kids. I am often reminded that the small moments together are sometimes just as significant as the big milestones. I seek to find bright spots in each day and share them with those around me.

Greece Study Abroad

By Amanda Klinger

Spring break was a wonderful time to be in Greece. Over this time, Sarah Wright and I led 18 participants through 4 different airports in the US, Germany, and Greece. Our group was quite diverse and many of the participants had never been out of the country.

We spent most of our time in the center of Athens. The first day we walked to the Acropolis where we climbed the hill to the Parthenon. It was amazing seeing first-hand the architecture and construction techniques of people from 447 BC. We traveled to Delphi to see the Temple of Apollo, which was also an amazing site constructed in the 7th century BC. Our activities in Athens included visiting many historical sites, dancing some traditional Greek dances, enjoying some wonderful Greek cuisine, and seeing so many cultural differences .

Then our group was delighted to travel to the island of Aegina to see a different side of Greece. We spent two days and one night on the island and enjoyed the slower-paced island life. This seemed to be the highlight of the trip for most of the group. Our first excursion was to visit the Temple of Aphaia. She was the daughter of Zeus and the temple was breath-taking on the highest point of the island. We soaked up the sun, the water, and all of the pistachio cuisine in just a limited amount of time. Aegina is known internationally for its pistachios, which are considered to be the highest quality in the world.

An unexpected highlight of our trip was seeing and petting the stray cats everywhere we traveled in Greece. Most of the cats were very friendly and seemed to be taken care of by the community.

We traveled with the Study Abroad Association and were led around the country by faculty members from the Hellenic American University in Athens. The faculty members were all very knowledgeable and were ready to answer all of our questions.

I have now led four trips abroad with students and community members. Each time it is such a joy to see people young and old discover the awe of traveling. Participants will always start planning their next trip before the end of the nine days. This trip was special for me because I was able to travel with my mom, and I will never forget it. I believe that the more people see and learn about other cultures, the more they will learn about themselves.
