A Message from National President
Rhonda McNall-Crisenbery
Women Who Inspire
I have highlighted many women over the past several month. Women who have paved the road in which we have benefited. We all know Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart but what about the other lesser-known notable women in history. I would like to highlight a few that continue to inspire and make the world a better place for those less fortunate.
|
Tammy Duckworth
Mrs. Duckworth is a senator from the state of Illinois and a retired National Guard lieutenant colonel. She has an impressive list of firsts for women:
- She’s the first Congress member to be born in Thailand.
- The first to give birth while in office.
- The first woman with a disability to be elected to Congress. Unfortunately, in 2004 she lost both of her legs when the Black Hawk helicopter she was riding in was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents in the Iraq War.
- Duckworth secured funding for the CHIL (Covenant House Illinois) facility to expand services for Chicago youth experiencing homelessness. The financial support will also support the transitional housing program for youth and other important initiatives that works to break the cycle of homelessness.
|
Katharine Graham (1917-2001)
Mrs. Graham was a well-known publisher & Chairman of the Washington Post for over 25 years. Her impressive firsts were:
- One of the first female publishers of a U.S. newspaper
- The first woman CEO of a Fortune 500 Company
- She oversaw the publishing of the Pentagon Papers and the Watergate scandal.
- The first woman elected to the board of the Associated Press.
- Significant contributor of “Send a Kid to Camp” for disadvantaged children.
|
Florence Griffith Joyner (1959-1998)
Ms. Griffith Joyner was born in Los Angeles, California in 1959, and was a world-class track & field athletic, known for her 6” fingernails and eye catching running suits. Her accomplishments were:
- She won a silver medal in the 200-metre race at the 1984 Olympics
- Griffith Joyner set world records in the 100 meters (10.49 seconds) and 200 meters (21.34 seconds).
- Griffith Joyner established a foundation for underprivileged children and from 1993 to 1995 served as the co-chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness.

Happy April! It is that time of the year and I am going to put my District Officer hard hat on as we prepare for convention this June! As your treasurers close their books for the year, I want to stress how important all the information is that is entered on your Pre-Convention Report (PCR). The basis for all the reports that you will receive at convention starts at the chapter level. If your chapter uses the software that is provided by National Council to keep the books, you should have everything you need to make this process go smoothly.
Please check and double check the information for each member, their status, and their email. These sheets are forwarded directly to the National Conductress to make sure we have an actual accounting of our membership. It might be a good idea to have someone else check that sheet to make sure names are spelled correctly and the email addresses are accurate.
|
You will be receiving a handy money flow chart if you are still unsure what you can transfer back and forth between your General Fund and Project Fund. It will help you if you have any transfers between the two funds that you need to make prior to closing your books for the year.
Also don’t forget if you do transfer money between accounts, you will debit one account and then show it as a deposit in the other account. I know it sounds very simple but we have had several chapters that have made this mistake and they find it confusing when things don’t balance.
You will also find that each balance sheet gives you clues if anything is wrong. There are fields that the PCR tells you must match. Please make sure they do. If they don’t match, we will send them back to your chapter to correct. If you need help, please ask prior to submitting your PCR to your district officer. Past treasurers will also be a big help to consult with. One common mistake is not telling us what any large sums of money carried over are for. If you have a speech and hearing clinic that isn’t held until a little bit later, let us know that.
|
Please know if you have not found a treasurer for the upcoming year and you leave that field blank on the Officers for the Coming Year page, we “need” that information as soon as you identify that individual. If we don’t have a name as we begin our 2024-2025 year, the information will be sent to the chapter president. Our presidents are usually very busy throughout the year and don’t have time to be a treasurer too!
Your District Officers are here to assist you so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any help at all.

KY State Association Spring Meeting
Written by Jane Patton, Southwest District Officer
I attended my first Kentucky Sate Association Meeting recently. Being from Indiana, and having never attended the KSA meeting, I was excited to meet my sisters from another state. In true National Council fashion, we carpooled. I met my driver, Mickie Hansen (National Vice President), her co-pilot, Rhonda McNall-Crisenbery (National President), and navigator, Valerie Helms-Mejia (National Conductress) bright and early on a gloomy Saturday morning. These car rides never disappoint and are a great time to catch up with each other.
The members of the Kentucky State Association met at Kids Haven by Sandy in LaGrange, KY for the 2024 KSA Spring Meeting on Saturday, March 9th. The weather outside was dull and dreary but the energy inside Kids Haven was light and fun as attendees celebrated “Blooming with Our Sisters Since 1897”.
Ashley Darnell, KSA President, kicked off the annual event by welcoming everyone and introducing National Council members and Past National Presidents in attendance.
Mary Emma Johnson, Iota Chi, LaGrange, Donna Carrithers, Theta Nu, Lexington, and Tania Miles, Zeta Iota, Lousiville, gave reports on their respective chapters. What’s a state association meeting without official business? Approval of meeting minutes and the treasurer’s report as well as reminding everyone of the upcoming Indiana Association meeting and National Convention occurred during the morning session.
Lunch was a relaxed time for socializing and networking. Mary Emma even baked homemade chocolate chip cookies that were divine. The obligatory chapter group photos were taken, although Carolyn Hagan from Zeta Iota tried her best to get out of the photos. Of course, a state meeting isn’t really a state meeting without a basket raffle. Many tickets were purchased by the group. I had my eye on and tickets in the basket for the Prada handbag.
Guest Speaker, Laura Tapp, Executive Director of Crossroads Pregnancy Resource Center, spoke about some of her experiences working in the pregnancy resource field. She shared that her organization supports not only the expecting mother but also the father and the entire family unit. Her stories touched the hearts of the entire room.
More official business was completed in the afternoon including the presentation and discussion of two proposed state projects. The afternoon ended with the basket raffle drawing. I didn’t win the Prada bag, or any other prizes for that matter, but my friend Mickie took the Prada bag home with her. Maybe I can borrow it?
Thank you, Iota Chi, LaGrange, Kentucky for hosting this wonderful day of sisterhood. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with my sisters and am looking forward to seeing you again soon.

IN State Association of Psi Iota Xi
The countdown is officially started!!
I don’t know about you but I’m so excited for this year’s State Meeting. The ladies of Gamma Xi are working hard to make sure you have a great day of fun, fellowship, and a sprinkle of business.
As most of you remember from last year, we voted to increase the State membership fees to help assist with funding more projects as well as the growing cost of living. I am proud to say that because of this increase we will be able to contribute a total of $10,000 in funds to the proposed projects. The $10,000 does NOT include the $3,000 for the rotating grant winners. WOW!!! So proud to be a Psi Ote!
Thank you all for your contributions not only to the organization but to the communities you serve. You are an important piece of the puzzle. I am looking forward to seeing the pieces come together to reveal the bigger picture.
On Friday, April 12, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM (EST), there will be a Welcome Party at Athens of Indiana Arts Gallery located at 216 East Main Street in Crawfordsville. We invite you to join us to socialize while enjoying desserts, piecing together puzzles, and making art.
Things to remember for April 13th:
- Sales room set up start time will be 8 am.
- Registration, raffle, sales room, and project displays will be open at 8:45 am.
- Delegates will need to be seated by 9:50 am. Meeting will start at 10 am.
- Lots of raffle items so make sure to bring your money. There will be a Coach bag worth $300, some Vera Bradley items, cold hard cash, chocolates, wine and lots of miscellaneous.
If you have any questions about the State Meeting, please do not hesitate to reach out to Tonya Michael, Pam Karle, or me.

Here is a quote I came across the other day and I think it fits us all. I was not able to locate who the author is to give credit where credit is due, but I hope you enjoy. It makes me think of all the good things we accomplish when we finally connect the pieces.
“Sometimes it’s hard to find all the pieces to the puzzle, but when you finally connect all the pieces, you realize the reason you worked so hard to find their place in part of the big picture.” – Unknown
