Grundy Center raises dollars with pork, gives to library

Over 1,000 pounds of pulled pork were sold recently in Grundy Center!!!

The Grundy Center Kiwanis Club has wrapped up its biggest fundraiser of the year. Under the expert direction of Dave Graham and over two weekends in October, the Kiwanis Club smoked, processed, packaged and delivered over 1,000 pounds of pork. Not only do community members buy for their own use, some purchase the pork to be delivered to the local food bank and the High School Spartan Pantry.
The Grundy Center Kiwanis also recently provided $5,000 for the remodeling of the teen corner of the Kling Memorial Library. The Kiwanis helped to support the library's summer reading program too by giving financial support for their programs and preparing and serving lunch three times to the participants. North Star Nights assemble book kits

The North Star Nights Kiwanis is a satellite group of the Estherville Noon Kiwanis. There are 10 members. At their last meeting in October, the members in attendance, along with Division 3 Lt. Governor Julie Weaver and a member of the Noon Club, assembled book kits. The kits have been a service project for over five years.

The kits are for the preschool and kindergarten classes at the elementary school. The children are given the kits on the family night in March, which gives the parent(s) the opportunity to help their child with the project of writing a story using the pictures in the kit.

The idea was taken from one of the district conventions. Attending district convention gives members the opportunity to learn and/or share ideas of service projects that are simple and fun to accomplish. Service is what Kiwanis is all about and having fun doing it!

Atlantic Kiwanians see busy October
The Kiwanis Club of Atlantic began the new Kiwanis year in the concession trailer handing out free hot dogs to the participants of “Tour de Parks.” This was an event where ambitious bike riders toured all seven of Atlantic Parks and the club rewarded them with a free hot dog. It was a lot of fun!

The club also did a “show and tell” of the 26 years of giving each third grader a bike helmet at the Kiwanis Kiddie Korral.

At the first meeting of the new year, members went over the Youth Protection Guidelines and Safety Officer Steve Green followed up with a recap of the similar Boy Scouts training that he had just completed.
Other activities in October included participation in the Fireman’s Parade. Dave Hancock and his grandson, David, were a hit in the Model T.

On Oct. 22, the club took its usual spot at the Business and Professional Women’s 52nd annual Fall Craft Show. Members not only showcased Kiwanis and community involvement, but they also sold American flags and took orders to install flagpoles and solar lights. This is a source for club income.
As a service project, the club gifted the Atlantic Lion’s Club with a new fag, flagpole and solar lights for their country school house in Sunnyside Park.

Creston member honored by community
To say that Creston Kiwanian Dennis Carter believes in giving to his community might be an understatement. Dennis was recently recognized by the Creston Chamber of Commerce as the 2022 Citizen of the Year.

Dennis joined Kiwanis in 1973. He grew up on a farm near Elmwood, Nebraska. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney for two years. After a year in technical school in Milford, he entered the Army and was stationed in Oklahoma. He started his business career in his home state of Nebraska, working in Hastings, York and Bellevue before moving to Creston in 1967.

Dennis has been active in Kiwanis, is involved with his church and is a precinct worker for elections. To read the full story about Dennis, check it out in the Creston newspaper, https://www.crestonnews.com/news/local/2022/11/04/dennis-carters-contributions-spread-through-creston/ (Photo courtesy of Creston News Advertiser and Shaw Media)

Creston Kiwanis is proud that another member of the club has received this honor. Since it started in 1995, five members have received Citizen of the Year. Others were Ed Ritter, Jack Kueter, Roger Lanning and Ron Levine.
The Creston Kiwanis Club has other great news to share this month too. The club’s Keep a Kid Warm campaign had another successful year. Over 100 coats were distributed to children in the community Oct. 18 from sizes 18 months all the way to young adult. The club ordered 20 additional coats to fit children who didn't have a size to match. Also distributed were snow pants, sweatshirts and other winter garments.

A big thank you was given to Kiwanis member Lori Harvey with Creston Specialty Care for a $500 donation toward this campaign. Another thank you went to Kiwanis Member Korina Loudon and the group FIVE who also donated $500 toward this campaign. Julie Lang, Dennis Carter, Drew Henderson, Justin Cole, Jamie Travis and Toby Henry helped to hand out the coats at the First United Methodist Church.

Ames Golden K off to good start in new year

Ames Golden K recently held a celebration to induct new officers and board members for the new year, recognize outstanding achievements of members and honor a record number of new members joining during the 2021-2022 Kiwanis year.
During the event, Jody Melcher handed over Division 11 Lt. Governor duties to Ames Golden K Member Larry Trede (pictured). Twenty-five-year Kiwanis members Duane Mangold and Gene Pollmann received awards from President Tom Baas, and 35-year Kiwanis members Doug Provow and John Abrams also received awards. Larry Trede was recognized as Golden K's annual "Kiwanian Of The Year.” The club celebrated the 17 new members that joined in 2021-2022 and recognized their sponsors (top photo).

Ames Golden K Kiwanis Club also recently exhibited at the Ames Seniors Expo on Oct. 13. It was sponsored by Seniors in Story, a network of more than 20 agencies that provide services to older adults in Story County, Iowa. For the Ames Golden K club, it was an opportunity to promote Kiwanis and the club’s community service projects and fundraising activities. Handout information was provided to all interested. Secondarily, information about club membership was available. The 2022 Senior Expo attracted 48 vendors and there was total attendance of more than 250 people. Exhibitor booths were staffed individuals from social service agencies, health care agencies and institutions, retirement living communities, government agencies, service clubs and other groups.
Ames Golden K members participating in the Expo were Bob Sperry, Larry Trede, Norm Scott, John Abrams and Cheryl Abrams. Members felt that it was very good exposure for Kiwanis as many visitors commented about hearing about the good work that Kiwanis Clubs have done in their community.

Boone Day-Breakers assist with Story Walk Project
The Ericson Public Library in Boone, Iowa has completed an outdoor Story Walk Project at a city park for children and families to enjoy the outdoors while reading an age-appropriate story. This unique project features one story that unfolds as a person reads a “page” of the story on a placard mounted on a metal frame and post. There are 22 posts located along the sidewalk from the park’s entrance leading to the swimming pool. The story concludes near the pool’s entrance.

Library Director Jamie Williams contacted the Boone Day Breakers Kiwanis Club and the local Rotary Club to solicit their interest in completing the project. Project materials and supplies were provided by the library. Ten volunteers provided the labor to complete the project.

It is the intent of the library to periodically change out the story to keep it fresh and interesting. Additionally, the project will enhance the reading skills and literacy of children when they visit the park. A ribbon cutting was held on Nov. 7.

Pictured are participants from Boone Day Breakers and Boone Rotary who assisted in the project.
