"Portugal Unveiled: Through the Doors of Time" Artist Reception

Join us for an artist reception with Liz Cardoso from Global Click Photography as we open her photography exhibit "Portugal Unveiled: Through the Doors of Time" in the library's Wallace Community Room. Light refreshments will be served.

"Portugal Unveiled: Through the Doors of Time" is a curated collection of photographs taken during the artist's visits to this picturesque country. 

Regarding her exhibit, Liz shares on her website that: "Doors are not just physical barriers; they are also gateways to new possibilities and experiences. Just as we explore the symbolism of Portugal’s vintage doors, we can reflect on the doors we encounter daily — the opportunities that present themselves, the challenges that may seem like closed doors, and the potential for growth and change. In essence, the exhibition becomes a call to action, encouraging you to approach life’s doors with a sense of wonder and possibility. By unlocking the symbolism inherent in doors, both within the frames of the exhibit and in your own journey, “Portugal Unveiled” invites you to transcend the tangible and step into a realm of endless potential — a celebration of the doors waiting to be opened and the stories yet to be revealed."

APRIL ADULT PROGRAMS

Baking Book Club at Lunenburg Adult Activity Center!

Join us at the Lunenburg Adult Activity Center at Eagle House (25 Memorial Dr, Lunenburg, MA 01462) for a collaborative monthly program: Baking Book Club!

Stop by the first meeting to learn how the cookbook book club works, what to do for our next meeting, and to check out one of the cookbooks selected for this month's baked good theme: pies!

There will be several different cookbooks about pies available to choose from when we meet on Monday, April 1st. Participants will pick a cookbook to take home and then try a few recipes from their cookbook during the month of April. Be adventurous! 

At our May meeting, bring a pie you baked using a recipe from your cookbook. We'll share samples and discuss what we liked and didn't like about our cookbooks, what we learned about baking pies, and everyone will choose a new cookbook to bake from during the month of May. 

Future themes will include breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, and more. We will explore different international foods, food sensitivity friendly baking, and historical/literary themes too!

"100 Books Bucket List" Club

In April, we are reading #15: Breath, Eyes, Memory, by Edwidge Danticat.

Our inspiration for this book club is a "100 Books Bucket List" scratch-off poster. We'll use the poster to choose our next title every month by drawing a number and scratching off that space to reveal our read. Titles range from epic classics, to short stories, and modern masterpieces both fiction and nonfiction. Challenge yourself with some books you may have never thought to read before, or revisit an old favorite to discuss with our group.

Robert Frost, Light and Dark

Robert Frost was described by a friend as "a good poet, but a bad man". America's great poet comes to life in this highly-praised one-man show. Robert Frost relates stories of his life, the tragedy as well as the humor and he reads some of his most popular poems, including Mending Wall, Birches, Nothing Gold Can Stay, Late Walk, Desert Places, Road Not Taken and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. For fans of Frost's work this is a remarkable and intimate journey through the life of the Pulitzer Prize winning poet.

J.T. Turner is an award-winning professional actor, director and writer with credits on stage, screen, and audio. A member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors Equity, he is also a historical reenactor, touring in shows about Shakespeare, Frost, Dickens, C.S. Lewis, and Aesop. He is founder and director of moonlight productions inc, a theater company dedicated to using theater as an outreach tool for children and teens, and artistic director of The Actors Company, a performing group working with non-profits.

This program is funded by the MaryEllen LeTarte Poetry Fund and the Friends of the Lunenburg Public Library.

Saturday Music Clinic & Performance Series

Join us on the first Saturday of the month for an interactive performance and clinic series with local music teacher and performer Jason Graham. Each session will cover a variety of musical topics and techniques ranging from beginner basics to more advanced concepts. 

This series is intended for music lovers and musicians of all levels and will include performances of a variety of songs designed to demonstrate different techniques and compositional elements. The format will allow for questions and discussion, with the first hour focused on the performance and educational elements, followed by an additional shorter session designed around group interaction. 

Attendees are welcome to bring their guitar for the shorter session following the performance where we will explore and examine any questions or concerns they have regarding their instrument or skills, and enjoy an opportunity to jam together on a song or two! 

Registration encouraged, but not required. The clinic series will meet at 11:00 am on the first Saturday in January, February, April and May 2024. Potential future dates will be announced in late spring. 

Creative Drawing Basics with Jill Pottle

Great workshop for those coming back to being creative or for people who want to learn a new skill. In this class we will be learning the basics of using the pencil and charcoal, drawing a variety of subject matter, ie. still life, landscape and portrait. Students will learn how to use the tools and create, value, perspective, line, design with some delightful subject matter. 

This class will provide basic materials. Bring your own lunch.

Registration required. This program is happening outside of Library operating hours; library services will not be available during this session. 

This program is generously funded by the Lunenburg Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

All Ages Solar Eclipse Viewing Party!

**WEATHER PERMITTING**

Join us for an eclipse viewing party at the library - weather permitting! *Event could be canceled due to cloud cover, the decision will be made on the day of the event. The library will give away ISO approved eclipse glasses for the first 100 people who register and show up by 3:00 pm. There will also be a few pinhole camera viewers and other methods you can use as safe viewing alternatives!

We will have crafting projects, coloring pages, lawn games, and snacks available for those in attendance.



Lunenburg should see a partial eclipse starting around 2:15 pm, ending around 4:35 pm. The peak of the eclipse will be at 3:30 pm, when we reach nearly 95% totality! Safe viewing of the eclipse at any point is extremely important! Do NOT look directly at the sun during the eclipse!

******Registration for each pair of eclipse glasses needed is recommended to reserve your pair(s). If you are not at the Library by 3:00 pm to collect your pair, your registration is forfeit. You do not need to register to attend the Eclipse Viewing Party, but availability of eclipse glasses is not guaranteed without a registration. *****

World Hand Drumming Workshop

Wednesday, April 17th

6:00 - 7:00PM

Mike Gregian will lead this 60-minute instructional and interactive program on world hand drumming techniques! The workshop will be focused on hand drumming techniques and music that traditionally uses doumbek or djembe.

Learn about Balkan percussive rhythm in particular, while also exploring the various ways skinned hand drums are used in music around the world.

All participants would need a hand drum with a skin such as a doumbek, djembe, bongos, conga, or a tambourine with skin, to practice these techniques and play songs with the class. Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Monthly Music Series Presents: Creeque Alley: A Tribute to American Folk Music

CREEQUE ALLEY, an Acoustic duo featuring local musicians Sean Fullerton and Dan Kirouac, pay tribute to traditional American Folk and "Feel Good" Flower Power Folk Rock hits from 1960 - 1969. Using a variety of guitars, harmonicas, and tight two-part vocal harmonies, CREEQUE ALLEY performs the songs with instrumental and vocal accuracy, and adds educational information about each song, along with a bit of humor throughout the performance. Sean and Dan encourage audience participation as well.

Registration is encouraged to help with room setup, but is not required.

Hive to Honey with Rainbow's End Apiary

Local beekeepers and honey experts from Rainbow's End apiary will be at the library for a special talk, honey tasting, and pop-up shop!

At the event you will find out how and why Rainbow's End began this journey and take part in an informative (interactive) discussion about beekeeping! Learn about the amazing Honeybee’s life cycle, as well as ways you can support the mission to “Save the Bees”.

And the best part... try sample honey from their local hives! The difference in flavor will amaze you!

At the end of the talk, participants can shop for local raw honey, gifts, and other small items $1.00-$25.00 (shop by cash/PayPal/Venmo). 

Spotted Lanternfly 101

We will be hosting Elizabeth Barnes from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) to talk about the invasive species affecting native plants in New England: the Spotted Lanternfly. Learn about ways to identify these insects, how they can be harmful to our native plants, and the proper procedures for reporting sightings to the MDAR.

After the presentation there will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions.

Children's Music and Movement Series with Monument Square Music School

Join us in the Community Room for a monthly music and movement series for children. These group classes are for children ages 1-5 This class will be held once per month from February through May .

In this interactive “Kiddie Music Time” children’s music class toddlers and young children can get their first taste of music through songs, games, and dance.

Whether learning a new instrument or singing along to the piano, kids will gain artistic and musical skills such as :

• Tapping rhythm in perfect time
• Singing in tune
• Familiarity with different music styles and rhythms including jazz, rock, and Latin.
• Creativity and exploration with music
• Dancing
• And the list goes on!

On April 8, 2024, the sun will go dark in one of nature’s greatest spectacles: a total solar eclipse. This phenomenon happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the sun for several minutes. Looking directly at the sun can injure your eyes, but if you want to watch the eclipse, you can safely view it with a shoe box solar viewer. This type of viewer is also known as a pinhole projection because the image of the solar eclipse is projected through the pinhole onto a viewing surface. This project is for kids ages 0-11- younger children will need adult assistance.

Teen/Tween Grow Your Own Salsa

Drop by the teen room and start your own salsa garden! Teens will plant tomato, jalapeno, cilantro, and green onion seeds to grow at home. They will learn how to care for the plants and solutions to common garden problems.
