For enthusiasts of gardening, art, or architecture, Wethersfield Estate and Gardens is unlike any other place on earth. A masterwork array of Italianate gardens, bucolic American landscapes, and Rococo-inspired artworks, the lifelong creation of collector Chauncey Devereux Stillman is a rich blend of styles and tastes, and contemplation of its striking beauty offers enticing glimpses into the mind of its founder.
On a gorgeous fall day, the ICAA and Wethersfield continued their longstanding partnership by hosting a garden tour, lecture, and luncheon. Mitch Owens, American editor of The World of Interiors, presented a lecture about Wethersfield's history that delved into Stillman's early life, analyzed the artistic influences on the estate's architecture and design, and reflected on the enduring partnership between Stillman and Pietro Annigoni, the artist of Wethersfield's astounding frescoes and one of the twentieth century's greatest portrait painters. The filmed lecture is now available to watch online in its entirety.
Presented as part of the Bunny Mellon Curricula at the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. The ICAA is very grateful to the Gerard B. Lambert Foundation for its generous support of this program, along with the Curricula's Lead Sponsor Hollander Design Landscape Architects, Continuing Education and Public Programs Sponsor Charlotte Moss, Garden Prize Sponsor Harrison Design, Garden Symposium Sponsor Kathryn M. and Ronald J. Herman Jr. Charitable Foundation, and Film Series Sponsor Janice Parker Landscape Architects.

The discussion was co-hosted by the ICAA and Architectural Digest in New York City.
Arne Maynard is an international landscape designer with a portfolio of high profile clients. He is an RHS Gold Medal and Best in Show winning designer, and is hailed by his profession as one of the most important landscape designers working today. He is also the author of several books including his latest, The Gardens of Arne Maynard.
The lecture was generously sponsored by Hollander Design Landscape Architects, Howard and Nancy Marks, and Karen Pascoe.

For over 40 years, the ICAA's Arthur Ross Awards have recognized the lifetime achievements of architects, painters, sculptors, artisans, landscape designers, educators, publishers, patrons, and others dedicated to preserving and advancing the classical tradition. Described by Architectural Digest as “the Oscars of the design world,” the Awards—named for Arthur Ross, a native New Yorker who spearheaded the revitalization of Central Park in the 1970s—quickly grew to become a major force of change in design history.
In this original documentary film produced by the ICAA, host Francis Morrone explores the history and significance of the Awards and Arthur Ross's contributions to the advancement of architecture, arts, and design, and six recipients reflect on the impact of this distinction on their careers. Their efforts demonstrate the importance of human-centered design, not just in our past, but in our future.
The film is currently airing on public television via PBS affiliates throughout the country, with an extended version available exclusively on the ICAA's website.
This film was made possible by the Estate of Christopher H. Browne and the Orville Gordon Browne Foundation.
