Image states, "2024 Internal Research Projects"

NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB) faculty members are collaborating across disciplines and universities on emerging questions in mathematics and biology. The Internal Research Project awards support research at the interface of mathematics, theory, experimental and empirical biology to develop new math that will accelerate biological discovery.

The NSF-Simons NITMB is pleased to share the titles and teams of select internal research projects exploring the Institute's five interrelated themes.

Upcoming Events

Image states, "Ecological Dynamics of Microbial Communities: a new approach"

April 29th - May 3rd, 2024: This workshop will explore new approaches to ecological dynamics of microbial communities. Co-hosted with the Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Innovation (IMSI). To foster discussions on these themes, we’re choosing a problem-centric format: instead of enduring a long series of research talks, participants will succinctly present open problems in the field, which will then be discussed by the whole group and in smaller breakout sessions. We are accepting applications until March 31.

Opportunities

Image states, "Visiting Scholars"

NITMB invites scholars to apply to its Visiting Scholars Program. The goal of this program is to enhance collaborations between biological and mathematical scientists and to stimulate creative thinking and interdisciplinary science. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. More information is available on our website.

Image states, "Propose a Workshop"

We invite the submission of proposals for scientific workshops to be held at the NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology. A Scientific Workshop is a week-long, focused program in a specific area of current research at the intersection of biological and mathematical sciences.

Image states, "Call for External Research Proposals"

The NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology requests proposals for pilot research projects concordant with its scientific mission based at institutional partners external to Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.

Image states, "Long Program Proposals"

We invite the submission of proposals for scientific long programs to be held at the NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology. Long Programs address one or more of our five research themes over the course of 4-10 weeks.

More Information

The NSF-Simons National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB) aims to integrate the disciplines of mathematics and biology in order to transform the practice of biological research and inspire new mathematical discoveries.

NITMB is a partnership between Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. It is funded by the National Science Foundation DMS-2235451 and the Simons Foundation MP-TMPS-00005320.
