Welcome to the latest DCC Edition of the SBS4DCC newsletter.

As we approach one of our most revered national holidays, I simply wish thank those who are and have served our great nation and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice on this coming Memorial Day.  Thank you for protecting my Freedom.

This edition features some great new products from the world of DCC that are sure to get your attention so read on.  I have added a category to highlight new additions to the store, 2016 New Products.  Wow, I have added 758 new items since January.  WOW!

I continue to press on with packing order and completing installs.  I have been working feverishly to get ready for the big train show that will in town in just a few short weeks.
I am blessed to garner help from a few friends and hope we can put together a nice operating display to show off some great homegrown Hoosier DCC products and services while we are there.

I would highlight my page about  The Infamous 21MTC Interface Connector once again.

This is everything you need to know, or at least everything I know, about this increasingly popular and sometimes confusing decoder interface.  New additions include a hands-on review of the newer entries to the field as well as compatibility between the brands.  Look for the newest information in "Fit and Interchangability" section.

I have also added some info on the new speakers from Soundtraxx and TCS to the Sugar Cube Speaker Application Notes page.

It really is a great time to be a... Digital Model Railroader!

So with that... All Aboard!

All the best, and once again, Thank you for your patronage.  Bryan

2016 National Train Show

July 8- July 10, 2016

Indiana Convention Center

See us at Booth 224...

Be sure to stop by and say "Hi" if you make it to the 2016 National Train Show this July.
I have recruited Mrs. V. to help staff the booth so I hope we get to meet you.

I am very excited our great city will host the 2016 NMRA National Convention and Train Show.  There will be tons of clinics and tours.  The local folks have been very busy getting their layouts in top condition for the many great operating sessions that will take place.

Interested in operations?   Join OPSIG now!  You will not regret it...

I personally can't wait for my chance to run on the Operations Road Show.  I grew up on the Wabash 2nd Sub and walked those ties a million times.  What a perfect layout to experience my first operating session on!  Who's excited?

If all goes well, I hope to have a new operating display as well to showcase some of the great DCC products made right here in Indiana and to demonstrate everything DCC has to offer.  Fingers crossed, head down, saw dust flying, iron hot...

Its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and should be lots of fun us all!

New ESU LokProgrammer Version 4.4.22

ESU has released the new version 4.4.22 of LokProgrammer software.

The most significant update in this release is a fantastic new feature called ESU "Full-Throttle".

You can see a few examples of this as well as how to set up these great new features in the following videos.

This great new feature can be incorporated in any ESU LokSound V4.0 or ESU LokSound Select Sound Decoder.

It is absolutely necessary to update the firmware and upload a new version of the sound file using the ESU 53452 LokProgrammer Set because the new features require the "Full Throttle" sound template.

All files will be updated in due time and made available for download from the ESU website.   ESU "Full Throttle" sound files can be easily identified as they will have names ending in  "FT" (Full Throttle).

The current list of ESU "Full Throttle" sound files includes:

73426 - 74426 for EMD 16 cylinder 645E: GP38, SD38
73431 - 74431 for EMD 16 cylinder 710G3A: GP60, SD60   NEW!
73436 - 74436 for EMD 16 cylinder 567C: F9, GP9, SD9
73447 - 74477 for EMD 16 cylinder 567D3: GP30, SD24   NEW!
75408 - 76408 for EMD 16 cylinder 645C: GP16, GP9RM, SD9M, GP20M   NEW!
73441 - 74441 for ALCO 12 cylinder 251B: RS11, RSD12, RS18, RS36
75409 - 76409 for ALCO 16 cylinder 251C: C425, C628   NEW!

ESU "Full Throttle" Decoder Operation for Diesels

It is often challenging to make a scale model preform like it has the mass of a 260,000lb locomotive pulling 5,000 tons or more! Some of this can be done with BEMF - when the loco "feels" a load, it will automatically rev up to work harder to pull this actual load. But this is often a flawed method in modeling. Today, model train car wheels are so free rolling that they often do not simulate sufficient drag to replicate a typical prototype situation. Also, often we do not sufficiently weigh our cars to represent a scaled-down version of the prototype. One of the biggest problems with BEMF controlled load is due to the fact that in our modeling and operations we often "simulate" loads inside a closed car. The payload inside a prototype car can weigh as much as 100-tons more than the car itself. This is especially important at operating sessions. Empties in and Loads out or vice versa. There is no way for a decoder to know the proposed weight of the cars it is pulling. Our "car cards", showing whether a car is loaded or empty, are seen only by the operator, not by our decoders!

To compensate for what the decoder cannot know, we have created Full Throttle decoder features! This series of new features includes "Drive Hold", "Run 8", "Coast", improved "Dynamic Brakes" and a new "Independent Brake" feature.

Drive Hold:

This feature allows the modeler to easily simulate a loaded or empty train by adding a single "Drive Hold" function button. When the button is pressed, the motor will remain at a constant speed, while the sound can be controlled independently from the motion with the throttle knob! This exciting, new feature gives the operator the ability to
have his or her train crawl in notch 8 or coast at 50mph. Then, by releasing the Drive Hold function button you simply go back to throttle-controlled speed and motion. No more switching between manual notching and programming on the main to go back and forth. All of this can be done on the fly with hardly even thinking about it.

Run 8:

There are times when hauling a heavy train over rolling hills that you may wish to remain in notch 8 at any speed desired. You could have the train slow, as it climbs a steep grade and then speed up upon levelling out. The Run 8 feature will allow for exactly that. Simply press the button and the prime mover will increase RPMs from wherever you are, all the way up to Notch 8 and hold. Once the function button is pressed, the sound is disengaged from the speed. Using the throttle knob you can now speed up or slow down with the sound remaining constant, at full throttle.

Coast:

The opposite of "Run 8". Often when coming to a stop, the throttle of a real locomotive is put into Idle and the engineer coasts to a stop. Another situation that occurs is that once a train is up to speed when operating over rolling terrain, the engineer can coast to maintain a certain speed. By pressing the coast function button, the sound drops from wherever you are to idle and remains there. Once this function button is pressed, the sound is disengaged from the speed. Using the throttle knob, you can now speed up or slow down the train with the sound remaining constant, at idle.

Brake:

Along with Dynamic Brakes, a locomotive has an Independent Brake as well. This allows for the locomotive to stop more quickly than its regular momentum would normally carry it. LokSound Decoders now also have a working Independent Brake. This one is pretty self-explanatory - just press the brake and come to a stop! While this will
work with whatever deceleration settings are in the loco, it tends to work more realistically if the loco has a large amount of deceleration. With these settings the loco will drift or coast much further when the brake is not applied. Then, by applying the brake, the loco will stop in a much shorter distance. As a note, you can now do standing
brake tests by keeping the brake on and advancing the throttle knob so the sound of Notch 4 can be heard. In EMDs this is the point at which the Shaft-Driven compressor reaches its second stage, and pumps air faster through the train.

Dynamic Brake:

The ESU Dynamic Brake works like the prototype. Once applied, the sound will drop to idle. Then (once the electricity dissipates from the traction motors) the prime mover will rise depending on the prototype. Most EMDs rise to about notch 4. Other brands will vary. Once the prime mover comes up, the dynamic brake fans will be heard. During this time, a deceleration will be quicker since you "have your dynamic brakes on." Once you release the button the fan will shut off as the prime mover drops again to idle. After a short delay the prime mover will once again come up to match the speed of your throttle - (other Full Throttle features may affect where your prime mover sound returns after the dynamic brake is turned off.) Please note, if you come to a stop when your
dynamic brake is applied, the fan sound will cease and the prime mover will go down to Idle. You will need to turn it off before you begin to move or the cycle will start again. Prototype locomotive dynamics will not work while stopped.

The ESU Dynamic Brake has not really changed much with the new added features. But the new files will now work better when consisted together and using the Dynamic Brake. Also since not all locos have dynamics, you will now be able to set up your non-dynamic locos to work correctly with consisted locos using dynamic brakes. The
ESU Dynamic Brake Logic Feature does increase the deceleration rate so please take this into account. If your loco does not have dynamic brakes you should still apply the "Dynamic Brake" LOGIC when consisting so that the engine slows with other dynamic brake-equipped locos in consist. If your loco is not equipped with dynamic brakes
please choose Sound Slot 21 (Coast) for the sound on the dynamic brake function button. This will have your loco drop the prime mover sound to idle while the dynamic brake-equipped locos in the consist go through the dynamic brake cycles. You should not use the "Shift" logic with non-Dynamic brake locos. Doing so will result in the prime mover rising up to Notch 4. This is not correct for Non Dynamic Brake Locos in a consist. It needs to stay at idle.

The Full Throttle manual and New Full Throttle sound files are available for download at the ESU website.

Train number detection

The new ECoSDetector RC can monitor its 4 track sectors in a special way: with the aid of the RailCom® technology ("local detector") one can not only find out if the track is occupied but also exactly which train is located there (train number detection). Of course, you must have RailCom® capable locomotive decoders.

Clever

Knowing which train is located where leads to new functions in conjunction with the route setting feature of the ECoS: you may, for instance, activate level crossing booms automatically or the train search for an unoccupied track in the storage yard. The switching inputs respectively track occupancy sensors are electronically "entprellt" in order to assure reliable feedback even in case of poor contact or pretty dirty tracks.

Connection to ECoSlink

Each ECoSDetector RC is directly wired to the command station via the EcoSlink bus. Besides the ECoS command station all types of the Central Station® Reloaded with ESU update are suitable. The galvanic separation of the bus system and the command station assures best possible reliability and data transfer to the command station. The command station automatically detects and registers all ECoSDetector modules. The devices can be comfortably and easily configured with the command station, which can also be done after installing the devices.

Future proof

The operating software of each ECoSDetector can be updated and expanded to facilitate additional functions, if necessary: whenever necessary this update will be accomplished automatically by the command station. Thus your ECoSDetector is technically always up-to-date.

New Soundtraxx Speaker Options

Soundtraxx High Power 28mm Round

As Tim 'the Tool Man' says... "More power, augh, augh!!"  We are now adding a new speaker to our product line that's more powerful at 1W (2W peak), yet still petite at 28mm (1"). This new speaker has a better dynamic range than our popular, standard 28mm speaker and does fit in our 28mm baffle (P.N. 810110).  This new wattage and range will help amplify sounds to better audio levels and reproduce the sounds more clearly.  These are better suited to match the power output levels of the ECO-200, PNP and 400 audio amplifiers.

Soundtraxx Mini Cube Speakers

Ideal for use with the ECO-100, these speakers pack a lot of punch in a small package. This makes them perfect used as standalone speakers or in multiples for even more power-handling and extra volume. The Mini Cube is rated at 8ohms, 1 watt and measures just 16mm X 12mm X 11.5mm. Despite its small size it produces an impressive volume level as compared to much larger model railroad speakers.  The Mini Cube 2 is the smallest model train oval speaker on the market, with a rating of 32 Ohms and 0.75mW peak power. At just 13mm X 9mm X 8.85mm it fits in many small models where sound applications seemed nearly impossible just a few years ago.

Team Digital, LLC

The CSCe (Central Signal Controller) is uniquely suited to control the SHD2 (dual signal head decoder). It can also control indicators on a layout or a CTC panel such as block occupancy and switch (turnout) position. The CSC has built-in customizable logic to implement various signal schemes. This includes ABS, APB and prototypical grade crossing. It can receive switch command and sensor/block detection messages from the serial bus and/or switch and block state from the inputs. It uses this information to determine signal states with the built-in logic. The number of wires to implement a signal system is greatly reduced when using the CSC and the SHD2.

Zimo MX649 Micro NMRA DCC Sound Decoder

The decoder family MX649 is the successor and replacement for MX646, thus the same interface options are available.

- DCC + RailCom, DC-Analogue, MM
- 30 V maximum voltage
- 0.7 A Motor-and Total Current (1.5 A peak)
- 4 Function Outputs (Lv, Lr, FA1, FA2)
- 2 Logic-Level Outputs for additional Functions, Servo-Control or SUSI
- 1 Watt Audio, 8 Ohm, 32 Mbit, 6 Channels
- All well-known ZIMO characteristics for Firmware Updating, Motor Control and Regulation, Train Control and Feedback

In terms of circuitry, the MX 649 is practically the same as the MX648 and MX658 (available for about two years or one year, respectively).

The decision between these three miniature sound decoders depends on to the desired interface :- NEM-651 MX649N PluX-16 MX648P16 Next-18 MX658N18 or in the case of where the interface is not important (wires only) then the dimensions decide: not so much by the absolute area (5% less in favor of the MX649), but rather by the reaction on the length and width:

Long and Narrow MX649 >>> (23 x 9 x 4 mm)

Short and Wide MX648 >>> (20 x 11 x 4 mm)

Zimo MX649 DCC Decoders offer the following features:

The miniature sound decoder for various N and TT models suitable as an alternative for 00/H0, driving and full sound functionality like the MX644 or MX645, despite small dimensions, 6 function outputs.

Decoder Versions:

MX649, 11 highly flexible wires 120 mm in length
MX649N, small (6-pin) interface connector
MX649R, 8-pin interface connector on 70mm wire
MX649F, 6-pin interface connector on 70mm wire

Dimensions:

.91 x .36 x .16 inch (23 x 9 x 4 mm)

Type MX820Z: without normal outputs, "only" 16 light outputs (open collector) for signal lights

Dimensions: 19 x 11 x 2 mm (one sided types MX820E, MX820X) or 19 x 11 x 3 mm (other types), or 19 x 12 x 3 mm (sealed type MX820D)

The most important common data for all variants of the decoder family MX820:

- DCC + RailCom
- 1 A total current for all outputs (3 A peak),
- 4 Switching inputs for feedback contacts or "forced circuits"
- The types and MX820E MX820V are shipped with shrink tubing (but not sealed)
- The types MX820X,-Y,-Z without shrink tube (so that the solder pads remain accessible)
- Compared to the previous version MX82D, improved by resin AND shrink tubing
- Easily distinguishable by the red colour from the other types

The decoder MX820 family of switches are used to switch double coil, motor and LGB-EPL drives, and for signals with bulbs or  LEDs. The MX820 with its compact design (as with the predecessors MX82) are particularly suitable for installation in a switch  cabinet or for placement in the track bed. Many other features of the MX820 as the same as the MX82, but there are still some  important improvements:

- Withstand voltage up to 40 V;
- Two to four inputs, which are used to automatically switch turnouts and set by track contacts or feedback, are now equipped with an internal filter, so that no external smoothing elements (capacitors) are required;
- Extremely cost-effective connection for 8 or 16 signal lamps or LEDs (e.g. 8 double-headed signals or 2 signals with 8 lights) in the case of the types MX820X,-Y,-Z;
- Software update in the collection process.
